Despite a 10-1 record, the Warrenton girls basketball team was given the No. 4 seed in next week’s second annual Washington Tournament.
The Warriors are the highest-seeded Class 4 team in the tournament, and face No. 5 Pacific Monday at 7 p.m. in the first round.
The top three seeds — Washington, Holt and Waynesville — are Class 5 programs.
Pacific was 8-7 heading into Tuesday night’s game against Parkway West.
The Indians are led by junior guards Caroline Rogers (15.3 points) and Devon Flemming (12.9).
Unlike Warrenton, which has won seven straight games and nine of 10 on the season, Pacific has had an inconsistent campaign to date.
The Indians have yet to win three straight games, and suffered a three-game losing streak in early December.
Both teams are young.
Pacific doesn’t have a senior in its rotation, while Amanda LaFaver is the only senior on the Warrenton roster.
Warrenton is coming off a big win over Duchesne, 40-35, in the Warrenton Winter Classic championship Friday night.
The Pioneers were No. 8 in the latest Missouri Class 3 poll.
Warrenton Head Coach Greg Williams isn’t looking past Pacific, but he hopes his team gets another shot at a state-ranked team next week.
Washington, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, was No. 5 in the Missouri Class 5 poll, and would face Warrenton in the second round if both teams win Monday night.
“I want that,” Williams said of the potential matchup with the Blue Jays. “Those games are what make you good, and I’m looking forward to that potential matchup to see where we are at.”
Holt, which handed Warrenton its only loss of the season Dec. 15, is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and faces Union in the opening round Monday.
Holt comes into the tournament with a 9-4 record, and could potentially see Warrenton again in Friday’s championship game.
“Hopefully we can go down there and have a good showing,” Williams said.
