Warrenton hands St. Charles West first conference defeat, Liberty advances

Earlier this season, the St. Charles West girls basketball team came to Gateway Conference foe Warrenton and walked out with a 19-point win.

This time, though, an energized Warrenton squad went to West on Monday, earning the 47-44 win. The victory gives Warrenton back-to-back wins for just the second time this season.

Warrenton coach Hannah Logan praised her team for its quick start in jumping to the 18-7 lead after the first quarter.

“We got out early and kept the lead the whole game,” Logan said. “The closest it got was two points. We were up seven with 1 minute, 30 seconds left and we gave up some layups.”

Warrenton (8-11 overall, 2-4 GAC North) was led in scoring by senior Zoe Duncan.

She, along with junior Sophia Benke, drained a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers to help Warrenton get to 18 in the quarter.

In total, Duncan paced the team with 17 points while Benke added 13.

West (16-4, 7-1) had its five-game win streak snapped. It was West’s first conference loss since Warrenton beat West on its home floor last season.

Warrenton will next face Orchard Farm (12-9) in its court warming game at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Orchard Farm beat the Warriors earlier this season in a 51-35 decision on January 23.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 86, PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN 37 – It was a big night for both the Eagles (20-6) and for guard Tommy Meyer.

Meyer tallied 22 points to lead the team and also carry his career scoring total over 1,000 points.

Liberty led 19-11 after the first quarter and turned in a dominant defensive second quarter, turning it into a 44-17 halftime lead.

After Meyer’s effort, which also included 11 rebounds to account for a double-double, Liberty received 20 points from junior guard Phoenix Obermann and 18 points and 17 rebounds from senior forward Willy Mueller.

Liberty will next face the conference’s top team, Westwood Baptist in the conference championship at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

WARRENTON, WRIGHT CITY BOYS FALL ON THE ROAD – The Warrenton boys dropped a second straight game in losing to St. Charles West 59-47 on the road.

Warrenton (8-14) will return home at 7 p.m. on Friday to face Orchard Farm (16-2).

Orchard Farm beat Warrenton 72-49 at home on January 23.

The Wright City boys had a rough time on Tuesday, falling 57-36 to Montgomery County on the road.

The loss was the team’s second straight after enjoying back-to-back wins.

Wright City (5-14) will next head to Veritas Christian (5-15) at 7 p.m. Friday to take on the Eagles after the programs’ girls teams play at 5:30.
