Warrenton grapplers recognized for breakthrough seasons

The Warrenton wrestling program had five wrestlers receive GAC all-conference honors this season. When it comes to wrestling and voting towards all-conference honors, the coaches look at how they perform in any conference meet.

Leading the way for the Warriors was their lone representative for first team with junior Andrew Jones (182), finishing 19-5 on his short season.

“He was handling his opponent in the finals (of conference tournament) when he hurt his shoulder and tried to keep wrestling and his injury took him out for the rest of the season,” Warrenton Head Coach Ryan Cross said. “Coming back next year as a senior, we expect big things.”

The remaining four wrestlers all earned GAC’s second team nod in their respective weight classes. District title winner and lone Warrenton state finalist Bryce Edison (106) finished his senior season with an impressive 32-16 record.

“Having someone like Bryce in our program is great,” Cross said. “Who wouldn't want someone who is dedicated, committed, works hard and is willing to sacrifice things that he can never get back?”

His brother Anthony Edison (113) also was selected to the second team. The freshman closed out his rookie campaign with a solid 18-17 record.

“We will see big things from him in the future,” Cross said. “He raised some eyebrows from other coaches and wrestlers with his performances.”

Also receiving second team honors was Colton Rice (170), who finished off his senior season with an 18-18 record.

“It was a positive to see Colton make an All-Conference team as a senior,” Cross said.  “This was his last year and to see the season all the way through was great for him.”

Colton Dyche (220) capped his junior season with a 26-21 record and a 2nd team all-conference honor as well.

“He won some matches at key points within our conference competition to give him an advantage to have an All-Conference selection,” Cross said. “We always expect more from our seniors because they typically are more seasoned.”
