For the Warrenton varsity wrestling Warriors, hopes are high that they can improve upon last season that saw just one wrestler, senior Bryce Edison, reach the state tournament.
“Last season was a bit of a down year for us,” said Warriors coach Clayton Olsson. “But Bryce went 2-2 at the state tournament and was one win away from being a state medalist. He ended the season with a 32-16 record. However, we did have some promising underclassmen step up and show some great potential at the district tournament last year. Freshmen Anthony Edison, Levi Penrod, and Anthony Lombardo were all one win away from qualifying for the state tournament last season.”
This season, the Warriors believe they have several wrestlers who can get to state and potentially make a deep run.
“We have high expectations for our returning team,” said Olsson. “We should hopefully get five or six state qualifiers this year that can compete for state medals.”
Among those returning from last year’s team are sophomore Anthony Edison, who wrestled at the 113-pound weight class last year and will likely wrestle at either 126 or 132 this year, sophomore Levi Penrod (138 last year, likely 145 this year), sophomore Anthony Lombardo (145 last year, likely 152 this year), sophomore Tyler Smith (160 last year, likely 160 this year), junior Andrew Sommer (160 last year, likely 170 or 182 this year), senior Andrew Jones (182 last year, likely 170 or 182 this year), junior Kyle Flowers (182 last year, likely 195 this year), senior Coltan Dyche (220 last year, likely 220 this year), and senior Josh Napier (285 last year, likely 285 this year).
Meanwhile, there will be some new faces hoping to step in and make an impact, too, and are thus far the coaching staff believes that there is a reason to be optimistic.
“Some of our newcomers this year are Josh and Jeremiah Kassing, Miguel Cano, Alex Jones, Peyton Nelson, Jacob Ruff, and Drake Volkman,” said Olsson. “A lot of these guys are brand new to the sport but they are learning fast and showing some good potential in the room.”
The Warriors first varsity competition was scheduled to take place yesterday (December 2) at Helias (Jefferson City). They are next scheduled to host Wentzville Liberty and Parkway North at home on Tuesday, Dec. 8, and are scheduled to compete in a tournament in Farmington on Saturday, Dec. 12.
