Warrenton Head Coach Matt Griffin has high expectations for his golf program this year.
The Warriors return five varsity players and hope to compete for a Gateway Athletic Conference championship.
Warrenton is led by Dillen Keeven, who was the No. 1 player in last year’s lineup and is expected to remain in that spot this spring.
“He’ll be our go-to guy,” Griffin said. “That’s not to say other guys couldn’t challenge him for that top spot, but I expect him to be No. 1.”
The Warriors opened their season Wednesday at Fort Zumwalt East, and Griffin is excited for Monday’s Bogey Hills Invitational.
“We’ll really find out soon how everyone is improving,” he said. “There is a big difference between a practice round and a competitive round.”
Griffin said Keeven will be joined in the top five with Conrad Schaumberg, Rob Hill, Tanner Burns and Ryan Adams.
“All five of those guys have a ton of potential,” he said. “It all just comes down to how they do on their own.”
Griffin expects to chase St. Charles West in the GAC North standings, namely senior Davis Soderberg.
Soderberg won the GAC North individual championship last season after shooting a 76 at Bear Creek Golf Club in Wentzville.
“He’s just a heck of a player,” Griffin said. “St. Charles West will be the team to beat because it never hurts to start with the best player in the conference on your side.”
Griffin called Monday’s tournament at Bogey Hills a good barometer for his team, and he thinks his players will rise to the occasion.
He said consistency will be a factor in how the team plays Monday, and the rest of the season.
“Getting their butts kicked last year has them hungrier this year,” he said. “They really want to do well because the idea of proving others wrong is contagious.”
The Warriors host conference foe Orchard Farm March 31, and follow it up with three more conference matches in a row.
They host the Warrenton Invitational April 14, and head to the district tournament May 3.
“The sky is the limit with this group of guys,” Griffin said. “We’ll have a lot of kids back next year, but I expect to be competing for a conference title this year, and I think we are capable of doing that.”
