Warrenton Head Golf Coach Matt Griffin called it the best round of Rob Hill’s career.
Hill shot a season-low 5-over par 40 to help Warrenton finish second in Thursday’s match against Elsberry and Bowling Green at Warrenton Golf Course.
Dillon Keeven tied Hill at 40.
“Those are some pretty good scores right there,” Griffin said. “It was the best nine-hole match of Rob’s career.”
Hill has shot with the second or third group of golfers most of the year, but has impressed Griffin of late.
The Warriors shot 166 as a team.
Elsberry won the match with score of 158.
“We’ve been getting better and better as the year goes on,” Griffin said. “It’s just a product of practicing and learning from previous mistakes.”
Earlier in the year, Griffin said his team could be prone to blowing up on a hole.
“But now,” he said, “Instead of a double or triple bogey on a bad hole, we’re getting a bogey.”
Conrad Schaumberg, who shot a 42 Thursday, and Ryan Adams, who shot a 44, also impressed Griffin.
“Conrad has been much more consistent these last few weeks,” Griffin said. “It was nice to see four scores in the lower 40s Thursday.”
Griffin said he hopes Thursday’s momentum can be carried over to Friday morning, when the team tees off at the Gateway Athletic Conference North tournament at the Links of Dardenne in O’Fallon.
The tournament was postponed Tuesday due to rain.
“We’ve got a tough road ahead of us,” Griffin said of Friday’s match.
The Warriors will look to beat conference favorites St. Charles and St. Charles West, which beat Warrenton April 19.
The Warriors shot 192 in bad weather, and Griffin said they will have to play better Friday to have success.
“You never quite know what will happen when you tee off,” he said. “Hopefully we can have good days out there.”
