With only one match under its belt a month into the season, it’s been a less-than-ideal spring for the Warrenton golf team.
The Warriors defeated Fort Zumwalt East March 21 thanks to sophomore Travis Toebben’s team-best 40.
A state-qualifier last year, Toebben is working to return to the state tournament in May.
“Travis has been focusing on becoming more consistent with his tee shots,” Warrenton Head Coach Aaron Jinkerson said. “I have noticed him also trying to get his average to a point in practice where he is happy with his scores. I am looking forward to watching him build off last year’s success.”
Toebben hasn’t been the only highlight so far. Early-season practice rounds have made Jinkerson optimistic heading forward.
“I have been really happy with how we have looked in practice,” he said. “Even though we were victorious, our first match really didn’t go as I expected because we had higher scores than in practice. But I think they will bounce back and have a great rest of the season.”
The team hopes to face St. Charles West Tuesday at home, which could potentially be just its second match of the season.
Jinkerson hopes the focus he sees every day in practice will show up on match days.
“I have been really surprised with the competitive nature the boys have had in practice this season,” he said. “They want to improve their games, and it has shown in practice.”
The team also will host the annual Warrenton Invitational next Thursday at 9 a.m.
“With the weather hopefully getting better, I am looking forward to watching us compete in matches and tournaments,” Jinkerson said. “The boys are ready to compete against other schools and pursue a conference title.”
