Warrenton golf comes up empty at districts

It was a frustrating finish for sophomore Dillon Keeven on Tuesday at the Class 3 District 3 Tournament at Aberdeen Golf Course.Late hiccups prevented the Warrenton sophomore from achieving his hopes of advancing to sectionals, as he shot an uncharacteristically high 93 to cap off an otherwise successful season. The Warriors failed to advance anyone past the round, landing in last place among 11 teams by shooting a 399. Warrenton will return all but one of its competitors that participated in the event."We're not looking for excuses, but this day was a challenge for us," said Barton. "The kids will learn from this and prepare themselves for next season."MICDS won the event with a 306."There were a lot of low scores, and we were in one of the toughest districts," said Barton. "I was real pleased with our efforts."Keeven says he was confident coming through the turn just +5 after the first nine holes on the back nine. But the front nine began to present some challenges he wasn't able to overcome."I had two bad holes and got carried away," said Keeven. "I started having trouble with my chipping, and on the last hole I felt apart. Until then, I was looking at finishing at maybe 87."The cutoff for advancing to sectionals was 88. He finished tied for 34th."It wasn't my day," said Keeven, who played a practice round at the Eureka course on Sunday. "My goal this year was to make it to state so to not even make it to sectionals is kind of heartbreaking. It makes me want to work 10 times harder."Next for Warrenton was Ryan Adams, who carded a 97.Sophomore Conrad Schaumberg carded a 104, while junior Rob Hill shot a 106.Senior Chris Groeber rounded out the day for Warrenton with a 121."I wasn't disappointed in any of the kids," said Barton. "We'll look at this as a challenge to get better for next year."DISTRICT GOLF TOURNAMENTDerrick Forsythe photo.
