The Warrenton girls track team is enjoying the luxury of the highest numbers its seen in recent years.Coach Mike Spoede has 25 on the roster, with the bulk of those being underclassmen.Madeline Carlson is the Warriors’ lone senior and has returned after missing cross country season with an injury. He is hopeful she can remain healthy and finish her career strong as a distance runner. That area has particular depth, with junior Mary Broker having emerged during the fall. The two will share roles running the mile and two-mile and will team up to empower the distance relays.“We’ve got a good situation there knowing what each of them is capable of,” said Spoede. “Madeline appears to running fairly healthy. She’s got all the experience she needs to get the job done.”Warrenton has two other juniors eager to make an impact in their respective events.Lalita Andrews will be a leader among the sprint events, while Meaghan Sanders runs the 300-meter hurdles and fills in on the 1600- and 3200-meter relays.“They’re very valuable from a team standpoint,” said Spoede. “I’m very proud we’ve got these three juniors out.”The Warriors also have three sophomore back who played an integral part in their conference championship.Andrea Poole, Darya Wilke and Courtney Richardson should all be able to contribute heavily in the track events.Emma Housewright will help out with the sprints, while Dajah Ray runs sprints and could excel in the jumping events.Spoede is also excited about the potential of Alyssa Cunningham, who has been coming into form as a pole vaulter.“We have high expectations for what she can achieve this season,” said Spoede. “We have good balance with distance and sprints. Hopefully it will be a fun season.”WARRENTON GIRLS RETURN TRACK EXPERIENCEDerrick Forsythe photo.
