After an interesting 2019-20 season that saw a multitude of injuries and a variety of other setbacks in a 16-win season, the Warrenton girls basketball team is looking forward to a less eventful if not challenging 2020-21 campaign.
“Last season was certainly an interesting season. We started off the season rather slowly due to injuries. We suffered an ACL tear, broken arm, hip injury, and complications from a drunk driver injuring a player,” said Warriors head coach Greg Williams. “We were able to put together a winning streak later in the season and then when we became sick with the flu. We literally had four kids able to practice at a time. The kids really pulled together and were able to win a district championship. It was quite an accomplishment for this group.”
Coming back from that group are several key contributors, but the lone senior returning is Malea Payne — a valuable asset for the Warriors both on and off the court.
“Malea has been with the varsity all four years of her career and has established a leadership position with the team this season,” said Thomas. “She has several offers to play college basketball and she represents this community well.”
Additionally, the Warriors will bring back a trio of juniors that includes Kaylin Haas, Garneisha Love, and Dana Pruitt as well as five sophomores — Zoe Klaus, Kaelyn Meyer, Alexis Obenauer, Audrey Payne and Kendall Taylor.
There will also be some even younger players stepping in on a team that will face several new, high-quality opponents.
“We will be asking several new and young players to develop quickly in order to help us with this schedule. Isabelle Benke and Naveah Hill will be asked to contribute on the varsity as freshmen,” Williams told The Record. “We have really strengthened our schedule. We have added several large and quality St. Louis County schools to our schedule. These include Eureka, Lafayette, Marquette, and Parkway North.”
Williams believes the strong schedule will serve his team well.
“This schedule will really push us to be competitive and make us stronger as the season progresses. This should be really challenging and help us down the road, and we are looking forward to a challenging season,” he said. “Hopefully, this will have us really prepared for the postseason.”
The Warriors are scheduled to open the season on Monday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. against Sullivan.
