WASHINGTON – The good times seem to keep on rolling for the Lady Warriors, who’ve won six of their last seven games after beating No. 4 seeded Pacific 65-42 Monday in the opening round of the sixth annual Washington Tournament.
The No. 5 Warriors got in front of the Indians 12-8 after the opening period and increased the advantage to 30-20 at intermission.
Pacific scored the first six points of the third and cut its deficit to 30-26, before Warrenton Coach Greg Williams called a timeout.
Whatever was said seemed to motivate his squad as the Warriors bust the game open by going on a 14-0 run to close the period.
Senior guard and Mineral Area College commit Brooke Smith canned three 3s and posted a career-high 29 points for the Warriors.
Also in double figures was junior Malea Payne with 16 points. Senior center Miranda Nelson added six, Dan Pruitt hit a 3 for her three points and Lexi Frederick and Garneisha Love had two apiece.
Pacific, which had won its last five meetings against the Warriors, dropped to 8-7 overall on the campaign.
The Indians were led in scoring by Lilly Prichard with 12 points. Annie Mueller had 11 points and eight assists and Cori O’Neill had eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Warriors improved to 8-6 overall with their first round tournament win. They took on No. 1 seed Wentzville Holt in the semifinals after Record deadline on Wednesday.
The Holt/Warrenton winner advances to the tournament championship and battles either No. 2 Lutheran South or No. 3 Ursuline Academy. Tipoff is slated for Friday at 8:30 p.m.
The two losing teams of those matchups will compete in the third place tilt, which is set for 7 p.m.
The Warriors finished in fourth place at last year’s Washington Tournament. They beat Waynesville 36-26 in the first round, before consecutive losses against Lutheran South and Holt.
