Warrenton Girls Return Experience at Guard

With experience returning at the guard positions and a pair of talented freshmen joining the mix, Coach Barb Woodruff is excited about the potential of her Warrenton girls basketball team. The Warriors welcome back juniors Hannah Sutton and Kylie Toebben, who are both three-year contributors on the varsity level.Warrenton will also look to a trio of seniors, with Tyler Gregory, Stacey Hemminghaus and Sam Swoboda hoping to make an impact during their final year.“They’re going to be expected to step up their game this year,” said Woodruff. And early in the season it has appeared that newcomers Jenny Jansen and Kaylee Anderson are prepared to make immediate contributions.Woodruff says Sutton, who averaged a team-high 13.3 points and two assists last season, has asserted herself as a leader.“Hannah has stepped into that role and should be one of our leading scorers,” said Woodruff. She is playing the two guard, while Toebben takes on the three guard as another shooter. She netted 6.8 points per game a year ago.“We can move Kylie inside or she can step out and shoot the three,” said Woodruff. “She’s gotten better defensively this summer and her and Hannah are trying to become stoppers.”But it will actually be Swoboda handling the point guard position this season.“She’s a pretty good ballhandler and plays really good on-the-ball defense,” said Woodruff. “She doesn’t turn the ball over very much and usually makes pretty sound decisions.”The Warriors will also look to Abigail Bartch at the guard role as a talented scoring threat.“She can come off the bench and play any of our guard spots,” said Woodruff. “She’s a real good catch and shoot type shooter.”Jansen, who dropped 19 in the Warriors’ season-opening win, will likely play a small forward.“She give us some versatility because she can step out and shoot the three or pound it inside,” said Woodruff.Hemminghaus will handle the center position.“Stacey is solid on screens and goes hard on the boards,” said Woodruff. “She does well at getting in position to get missed lay ups.”Gregory will also be a player capable of playing multiple roles.“She can stay around the basket and protect,” said Woodruff, who says Anderson will be an effective weapon for her ballhandling skills.Offensively, the Warriors are planning to employ a flex offense.“We’re trying to work on setting more back screens, because that’s a hard thing to defend,” said Woodruff. “We want better ball movement, swinging the ball side to side.”On defense, she feels this year’s team is best suited for playing a zone look.“We’ve got personnel that can pressure the ball on the outside, but we’re a little thin on the inside,” said Woodruff. “We want to force teams into bad shots.”Concerning goals, Woodruff says she wants her team to compete well every game and ultimately reach the district championship.WARRENTON GIRLS BASKETBALLDerrick Forsythe Photo.
