Warrenton Girls Place Two on All-GAC Team

The addition of a third scoring threat helped lift the Warrenton girls basketball team to a .500 finish during the 2013-14 season. The Warriors went 12-12, proving more difficult to guard with the addition of freshman Jenny Jansen, who was a first-team All-GAC selection, along with junior Hannah Sutton.“All in all, I thought we had a pretty good season,” said Coach Barb Woodruff, who adds her initial prediction was a 15-9 finish.“We competed in all of our games, but we let a couple slip out of our hands,” said Woodruff.Warrenton was unable to snap its postseason losing streak, falling in the first round of districts to St. Dominic.Statistically, the Warriors were improved in just about every category.“Every phase of the game that’s positive went up and turnovers went down,” said Woodruff.Ballhandling and security had been concerns in the past, but improved guard play helped the Warriors handle pressure and pose more of an offensive presence.Jansen led the attack with 17 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, playing underneath the basket despite often being undersized. She shot 50 percent from the field and also led the team in steals.“Jenny had a big impact on our rebounding and scoring,” said Woodruff. “She brought a lot of intensity and tenacity.”Sutton returned as a third-year starter, controlling the point guard position and facilitating the offense. She was responsible for 14.8 points and just over two assists per game.“Hannah showed more leadership this year and was critical in some of the games where people had to foul,” said Woodruff. “She knocked down free throws and came through in the clutch.”Junior Kylie Toebben provided the Warriors’ most effective touch from beyond the perimeter, knocking down 37 percent of her three-point attempts. She averaged 7.8 points and 3.8 boards per contest.“She gave us that third scoring threat,” said Woodruff. “If she, Jenny and Hannah were all on, we were pretty tough.”Woodruff also complimented on the play of Tyler Gregory, who battled down low for boards.“Even though she didn’t score a lot of points, Tyler got some huge rebounds down the stretch,” said Woodruff.Warrenton also relied on Sam Swoboda and Abigail Bartch at the guard position.“I felt like we definitely had more of an inside-outside presence this year,” said Woodruff. The primary area of concern for the Warriors was defense.“Our defense is still an area of concern,”said Woodruff. “We have a tendency to relax on the defensive end, and you just can’t do that. Sometimes we got a little lackadaisical, and it costs us a few games.”

Warrenton junior Hannah Sutton and freshman Jenny Jansen were named to the All-GAC First Team.
