Going on a 12-point run in the second quarter proved to be just what the Warrenton Lady Warriors needed Monday to win their season opener at Union, 55-50.“The Four Rivers is a tough conference and any time you can get a win over one of these opponents is a nice way to start the season,” said Warrenton Head Coach Barb Woodruff. “We got down 12 points at some point but our girls battled,” Union Head Coach Dusty Weiskopf said. “We’re behind a lot of other programs in the Four Rivers Conference and we know that. We’re just trying to get better. We did some really good things tonight.”Union had scored to take a 9-7 lead when Warrenton got a basket by freshman Jenny Jansen in the quarter’s opening minute to tie the game.By the time Union halted the run with a Megan Altemueller free throw with 2:09 left in the quarter, Warrenton had built its lead up to 10 points, 19-9.“We had our opportunities there early,” Woodruff said. “We just mishandled a couple of passes and fumbled there. We just kept at it and we were able to jump on them with that 12-0 run. That gave us a little spring.”Weiskopf said that run left Union in a bad situation. The run helped the Lady Warriors turn a 7-5 Union advantage after eight minutes into a 23-14 Warrenton lead at the intermission.Warrenton led 39-33 after three quarters before Union made a hard run in the fourth.“You have to use so much energy trying to make a comeback,” Weiskopf said. “We had to put them at the line. They shot a bunch and they made a bunch. We did some really good things. We’re trying to jell as a group and get better.”While the Lady ’Cats closed to within three points with 52.9 seconds to play, Warrenton was able to hold onto the ball and secure the victory, 55-50.“We hit some big layups there in the fourth quarter,” Woodruff said. “We broke their pressure and got it to the middle of the floor. We made the right decisions.”Weiskopf credited his team for fighting back later in the game.“I thought we played very well for our first game as a unit in this new era,” Weiskopf said. The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by Jansen, a 5-10 freshman. She scored 19 points on seven baskets and went 5-13 from the free-throw line.“For being a freshman, she’s a nice athlete,” Woodruff said. “She’s going to learn. That’s a great way to start your first varsity game. She did make a big difference when she came in during the second quarter. That gave us the lift we needed.”Junior Hannah Sutton netted 13 points before fouling out with 3:48 to play. She was Warrenton’s only player to shoot better than 50 percent at the free-throw line, hitting five of nine attempts.“She’s pretty strong and hard to guard on the open floor,” Woodruff said. For the game, Warrenton went 16-37 from the free-throw line. The Lady Warriors hit 18 two-point baskets and one three-point shot. Warrenton was called for 18 fouls.Following Jansen and Sutton were junior Kylie Toebben with eight points, senior Sam Swoboda with six points, junior Abby Bartch with five points, freshman Kaylee Anderson with four points.“It was a total team victory,” Woodruff said. “Abigail Bartch hit a big three. Kylie Toebben carried us early and got a few baskets. Everyone had to do a little bit of everything, so it’s a great team victory.”Union was led by junior Bri Clark, who scored 20 points before fouling out with 19.6 seconds to play. Clark hit seven field goals and was 6-12 from the free-throw stripe.“She will open up a lot of things,” Weiskopf said. “She could be a really good player and that will open up a lot for our shooters. Tonight, we didn’t shoot well, but we’ll work on that and get better.”Senior Anna Houston scored 12 points, all on field goals.Senior Megan Altemueller scored 10 points with two two-point baskets, one three-point shot and was 3-4 from the free-throw line. From there, senior Ali Overstreet and juniors Kayla Kelly and Emily Nowak and sophomore Emily Bay scored two points apiece.Union hit 19 two-point baskets, one three-point shot and went 9-18 from the free-throw line. The Lady ’Cats were whistled for 27 fouls, many when Union was trying to put Warrenton on the line in the fourth quarter in an attempt to catch up.“We’re going to be competitive night in and night out,” Weiskopf said. “I think if we fine-tune some things, we’re going to be competitive.”Warrenton comes back to Franklin County next Tuesday, playing at Washington.Union returns to action next week in the Northwest Tournament.
