Warrenton Girls Lose First-Round Game

Zumwalt North’s outside prowess was too overwhelming for its host during the opening night of the Warrenton Winter Shootout. The Warriors rallied back from a 14-point first-half deficit but failed to convert on a potential game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation. It marked a fourth straight loss for Warrenton, which fell 46-43.“We just don’t get out of the gates very fast,” said Coach Barb Woodruff. “If we dig ourselves too big of a hole, we can’t catch up.”Freshman Jenny Jansen had imposed her will on most defenses she’d faced to this point in the season, but Zumwalt North had other ideas. The Panthers clogged the lane, contesting her shots and forcing Jansen into turnovers.“She struggled in the first quarter with getting into position,” said Woodruff. “She was sometimes trying to do too much. She may have been pressing a little hard in the first quarter.”By the time she could adapt, the Warriors were already trailing 17-5 after one quarter thanks to tremendous outside shooting. In fact, Zumwalt North didn’t even need to engage its inside game until the second half.“Their threes were critical,” said Woodruff. “We did a better job on them in the second half. We knew who the shooters were, but we just didn’t get out on them.”The Panthers soared to a 14-point lead early in the second period, before Warrenton tore off a 10-2 run.“We went to pressing and attacked a little more,” said Woodruff. “We moved better defensively. We kept changing our defense to confuse them. We turned up our tempo when we went to our 1-3-1 trap near the end of the first quarter.”Consecutive three-point plays — a traditional two-and-one by Hannah Sutton and a trey by Jansen at the buzzer — helped put the Warriors back in contention moments before halftime.Trailing 25-21, a tremendous effort by Warrenton in the third quarter enabled to them to tie the game on a bucket by Jansen. The Warriors then engaged their own three-point accuracy, as Sutton knocked down back-to-back triples to give Warrenton a 42-40 lead.“Hannah knocked down four threes in the second half that helped us,” said Woodruff. “Jenny stepped up and Sam got couple layups off flex cut.”Zumwalt North responded with two unanswered buckets and a desperation three from Sutton fell short as time expired.“Every possession is critical, especially in games that are tight,” said Woodruff.Warrenton shifted into the consolation bracket where it will face Timberland on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Black Hawk Middle School Fieldhouse. In the second game held at WHS on Monday, Duchesne topped Timberland 67-35.Two additional contests were held at the Black Hawk Middle School Fieldhouse, with Howell North defeating the St. Louis Patriettes 56-54 and Mexico besting Howell Central 47-35.Duchesne will face Zumwalt North on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Warrenton, with Howell North versus Mexico following. Also playing at the Fieldhouse on Wednesday will be Howell Central against the Patriettes.
The Warrenton girls basketball team dropped its first-round game of the Winter Shootout to Zumwalt North.
