Warrenton Girls Lose Consolation Final

Befuddled by Chamois’ tremendous inside presence, the Warrenton girls basketball team fell short of its consolation title bid.Hannah Sutton’s four three-pointers were not enough to lift the Warriors out of a 48-41 loss on Friday in the Hermann Tournament.“We had them on the ropes, but we didn’t finish our game,” said Coach Barb Woodruff. whose team led by three heading into the fourth quarter.Warrenton trailed 12-11 after one quarter, struggling to contain Chamois’ biggest threat, who netted 15 points in the first half.“They’ve got 2 quality post players that made the big difference,” said Woodruff. Nolte knocked down five three pointers for the Pirates, presenting a defensive dilemma for Warrenton.“We’ve got to at least get out and get a hand in Nolte’s face,” said Woodruff. “When you’ve got good shooters like that you’ve got to keep your eye on them and be aware of where they are at all times.”She says her team had too many lapses to hold the opposition in check or pull away. The Warriors trailed 23-19 at halftime and fell behind by as much as eight before Sutton began to unload from beyond the arc. She knocked down four three-pointers, scoring 13 of her 16 points in the stretch to guide Warrenton on a 15-4 run.“Hannah was huge in the third quarter, helping us get ahead,” said Woodruff. “But we just couldn’t keep it up. Offensively, we kind of went stale around the 6:00 mark of the third quarter.”Warrenton tried to speed the game up and get out in transition. The press proved effective at times.“When we hurried them up, we knew we could pressure their young guards,” explained Woodruff. “Once they got the ball down on the block, they were hard to stop.”Unforced turnovers were also a concern for the Warriors, who began giving up the glass in the final two periods.“We went for about a two-minute stretch where we didn’t rebound,” said Woodruff. “They managed to get up by five, and then we were pressing to try to force the ball in the hole instead of reading the defense.”Perhaps most pivotal for Chamois was its perfect 7 of 7 mark from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.Freshman Jenny Jansen added 14 points for the Warriors, and Woodruff says she recognized the positives.“I liked our resiliency, because we didn’t get down emotionally once we fell behind,” said Woodruff. “We rallied back.”
