Following the best finish in program history, the Warrenton girls basketball team was granted a rather unprecedented reward.Despite placing third in the GAC behind 20-plus-win programs St. Charles and St. Charles West, the Warriors were awarded two spots on the all-conference first team. They went 18-8 overall.“I thought that was great for us and a real honor for our girls,” said Coach Greg Williams. “It’s a real tribute to their hard work and commitment.”Hannah Sutton — Senior earned first-team honors after averaging 15 points and 2.3 steals per game. She was also responsible for 2.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds from her point guard position. The four-year starter knocked down 30 three-pointers, going 33 percent from beyond the arc.“Her ability to get to the basket was really good,” said Williams. “She was able to draw fouls and get to the free-throw line a lot.”She surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark during the Warriors’ host tournament in early January.“She had so much experience, playing the select league against great competition,” said Williams. “It’s been really advantageous for her during her school season.”Jenny Jansen — Sophomore averaged a team-best 16 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest from her position in the paint.“She’s so competitive and plays hard,” said Williams. “She really took over that St. Charles West game in sectionals and did a super job of helping us get back in it when we were sunk.”Jansen actually led the team in steals too with 2.95, while chipping 1.6 assists a night.“She’s tough to guard,” said Williams. “She’ll post up a guard and treat a post like a guard and take her to the basket. She’s faster than big kids and stronger than small kids. She creates a tough matchup.”WARRIORS EARN FIRST-TEAM HONORSDerrick Forsythe photo.
