It was about as ugly as a win could be, and Coach Barb Woodruff was happy to be on the victor’s side.Just two players scored for the Warrenton girls basketball team on Friday, as it survived a tremendous comeback effort by Orchard Farm. The Warriors outlasted their GAC foe 36-33, despite giving up a 15-point lead.“It’s better to win ugly than to lose pretty,” said Woodruff. “It’s a good conference win for us.”Warrenton surged out to a 13-3 advantage after one quarter and led 22-12 at halftime.“We got out in the passing lanes and got some steals early,” said Woodruff.Orchard Farm continued a monstrous comeback in the third quarter, going on a 20-5 run to notch the game at 23-23 after three quarters.“In the third quarter we came out flat-footed,” said Woodruff. “We let their best shooter knock down three three-pointers to tie it up.”Freshman Jenny Jansen worked relentlessly to keep her team in control, but the Eagles complicated matters for her down low.“They used a match-up zone against her,” said Woodruff. “When she set a pick we were trying to get her to roll to the basket. We hit Tyler (Gregory) a couple of times, but she got blocked.”Meanwhile, junior Hannah Sutton found her touch from the outside, knocking down three treys.“Hannah hit some big threes for us,” said Woodruff.Jansen’s rebounding effort was particularly important, as she never let the Eagles take the lead. She also hit pivotal free throws down the stretch to help the Warriors escape.“Jenny got that huge offensive rebound and putback to put us up by four,” said Woodruff.Orchard Farm had a chance for a game-tying three on the final possession but tossed the ball away on an errant pass.“We made some unforced turnovers and kept turning the ball back over,” said Woodruff. “We couldn’t get any momentum going.”Woodruff says she was concerned about how well her team would play coming off four days of no school due to inclement weather. Practice time had been very limited.“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Woodruff. “You get concerned about conditioning, and it’s impossible to get any consistency in our routine.”
