By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorWarrenton junior Andrea Poole was happy about her second-place run in the Class 3, District 4 Meet. But she was more excited upon learning she will be joined by the rest of her teammates at this Saturday’s state meet. The Warriors finished second overall out of 10 schools and earned one of the two state berths at Saturday’s home meet.“We had been looking at the scores and times from the other teams the whole time,” said Poole, who qualified for state as a freshman. “We were hoping we could get second place. That is what we wanted.”Warrenton had 76 points, helped by three runners placing in the top 14, to edge Christian for the second-place spot by seven points. Liberty had five runners place in the top 13 and won the team crown with 38 points.Only the top two teams and top 15 individuals qualify for state. The Class 3 girls race will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at 12:25 p.m. at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City. This is the first time since 2008 the girls have qualified as a team.“This is amazing because it means so much more to go as a team,” said senior Mary Broker, who is a two-time state qualifier.“To think we did this as a group, it’s awesome. “I think a lot of it was we supported each other and we always encouraged each other. We were very positive. We were never like the odds are against it. I think it was the optimism that led us to do it.”Poole finished the race in 21 minutes, 33.66 seconds. Liberty sophomore Alexis Kayser was the top individual in 20:49.17.“She went out and ran her best race of the year,” Collins said. “She has gained a lot of confidence the last couple of races and is running really well.”Broker was seventh in 22:38.21, while senior Meagan Sanders followed in 14th in 22:55.54.This is Sanders’ first time qualifying for state.“I am so glad we are making it as a team,” Sanders said. “This is my senior year and I have always been really, really bad. The fact that I was good enough to qualify and as a team, we have really come together this year. It’s been amazing.”Collins added, “We needed our top three to be in the top 15 and it was unbelievable how well they did.”Warrenton’s other runners were junior Darya Wilke (21st, 23:21.66), senior Madison Stevens (32nd, 24:14.18), junior Emma Housewright (49th, 25:24.16) and sophomore Emily Brunson (51st, 25:31.98).“Everyone stepped up today and ran great,” Collins said. The team now heads to Jefferson City and is ready to run against the state’s elite.“As the race was developing I was thinking, ‘We may have a chance,’ ” Collins said. “As a team and as individuals, they have exceeded their goals that they set at the beginning of the season.”
