The weapons continue to be exposed on a weekly basis for the Warrenton girls track team.Another dose of competitors rose to the challenge last Thursday, helping the Warriors to a second-place finish at the Wright City Invitational.Coach Mike Spoede is thrilled with the contributions being made by his cast of newcomers.“I’ve talked to them about how about balance is, and we’re getting girls scoring points in just about every event,” said Spoede. While there were perhaps some expected top finishes, others were a surprising sign of the future.Freshman Kayla Nelson won the shot put with a heave of 32 feet, 9 inches — and wasn’t the only underclassmen to leave her mark.“She did quite well, and so did several other newcomers,” said Spoede.Sophomore Alyssa Cunningham place third in the pole vault by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches and seeing her offseason commitment pay off.“She’s worked very hard in the offseason,” said Spoede. “I was thrilled to hand out a varsity medal to her.”Freshman Rylie Cox was also impressive, placing third in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet, 9 inches.Additionally, sophomore Dajah Rays took second place in the 100-meter race with a time of 17.08 seconds.Another steady for the Warriors has been sophomore Courtney Richardson, who continues to show improvement in the hurdle events. She finished third in the 300-meter with a time of 52.3 seconds.“Courtney has been doing a fine job for us all season,” said Spoede.Junior Lalita Andrews also had another strong meet, winning the high jump by clearing five feet and placing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.02 seconds. Many of these competitors also excelled in team events and relays.Andrews joined sophomores Liberty Billings, Emma Housewright and Ray to place third in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:57.The cast of Andrews, Billings, Housewright and Cox took third in the 400-meter relay with a 55.08-second finish.“Our relays have really been performing well for us,” said Spoede. The distance events also helped bring in points, led by senior Madeline Carlson, who won the two-mile with a time of 13:08 and finished second in the mile. She was a part of the 3,200-meter relay team, along with junior Mary Broker, sophomore Andrea Poole and freshman newcomer Susan Broker, that won in spite of missing a usual starter. In addition, the 1,600-meter relay cast of freshman Sabrina McRoberts, Poole, Cox and Ray, placed fourth with a time of 4:45.“If we continue in the direction we’re going and remain healthy, we should have an excellent rest of the season,” said Spoede.WARRENTON GIRLS FINISH SECONDDerrick Forsythe photo.
