Warrenton girls fall to host team in Washington Tournament title game

It took a record-setting effort to derail Warrenton’s upset bid Friday night in the Washington Tournament championship game.Washington senior Kristen Charboneau sank 10 three-point baskets as the top-seeded Lady Jays defeated sixth-seeded Warrenton, 61-50.“We’re a young team,” Warrenton Head Coach Greg Williams said. “We needed championship experience and we’re getting that. To play a championship game against a good team will only make us better. We’ll get a chance to go back and correct our mistakes and straighten this thing up. We’re tough. I’m really proud coaching these girls.”Charboneau’s effort ranks fifth in MSHSAA history for most three-point baskets made in a game and her six threes in the first quarter tied the state record for most threes in a quarter.“I did not think I would hit 10 three-pointers in one game, but I’m glad it happened,” Charboneau said. The bigger shock was that Charboneau hadn’t hit a single three in the first two tournament games.“When that first one went in, I could almost physically see that weight go off her shoulders,” Washington Head Coach Adam Fischer said. “When they found her, she was money.”Williams had scouted Washington and knew Charboneau had struggled.“I didn’t know she had that in her,” Williams said. “If I would have known that, we might have tried to take her away from that. That’s on me. My kids played hard and they played great. I’ve just got to put them into a better position.”Warrenton’s Cinderella run, which included upsets against third-seeded Union and second-seeded Holt, impressed everyone.“Warrenton made us earn  tt,” Fischer said.“They were ranked sixth, but they sure didn’t play like they were sixth,” Charboneau said. “They should have been at the top of the bracket.”Washington senior Megan Freitag agreed.“They definitely were not worthy of a sixth seed,” Freitag said. “They should have been higher up there. They showed it in their first two games and they put up a good fight tonight. I tip my hat to them.”Sophomore Kyra Hardesty noticed Warrenton’s improvement.“They’re a lot better than last year,” Hardesty said. “No. 4 (Hannah Sutton) really drove to the basket and played good defense on us.”Washington, down to just six eligible players for the game, needed every one of them to hold off the Lady Warriors for the title.Early, it was Charboneau who carried the team with six three-point baskets and 18 of Washington’s 21 points in the first quarter. Her final two tied the game after Warrenton led by as much as seven in the opening quarter.“We were able to weather that storm in the first quarter,” Fischer said. “Kylie Toebben, Ashtyn Dixon and Kaylee Anderson hit some major shots in the first quarter. We found ourselves down in the first quarter. Kristen, Megan and Emma Boehmer kept us in the game during that first quarter. We were within striking distance. After that first quarter, we knew the storm was over and we started playing our basketball.”Washington led 31-29 at the half and 42-37 after three quarters. In the last part of the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays finally started to distance themselves.Charboneau was named the event MVP while Hardesty, Warrenton senior Sutton and sophomore Jenny Jansen, Holt junior Mel Taouil and St. Clair sophomore Kelsey Wachter were named to the all-tournament team.Anderson led the Lady Warriors in scoring with 14 points, including three three-point baskets.Sutton added 11 points while Amanda LaFaver scored nine, Jansen ended with eight, Toebben added six and Dixon netted two points.Following Charboneau were Hardesty (12 points), Boehmer (10), Freitag (five) and Nichole Brinker (four). Macy Robinson did not score.Williams was happy with the support his team had during the game. For much of the contest, Warrenton had the more vocal student group. “The fans have been great,” Williams said. “They’ve been doing their part, coming out and cheering us on. We’re having a pretty good season. We’re 13-5. Warrenton is going to support a winner. We just have to make sure to give them one.”WARRENTON FINISHES SECONDBill Battle photo.
