For Coach Barb Woodruff, Monday’s season-ending loss was simple. Her team didn’t make shots. She couldn’t complain about the shot selection or the overall effort of the Warrenton girls basketball team during a 49-24 setback to Duchesne during the Class 4 District 7 Tournament.“They came didn’t come in there and walk all over us,” said Woodruff. “We competed and made them earn it.”The game was lost during a scoreless second quarter.“We got some good looks in the high post, but we couldn’t knock them down,” said Woodruff. The Warriors competed closely in the first period, playing solid defense to counter its own low field-goal percentage. Duchesne lead 12-9 heading into the second.“They came out in a 1-2-2 and trapped us in the corners,” said Woodruff. “We had too many turnovers.”Warrenton was outscored 14-0 during that frame. The Warriors trailed 26-9 at halftime, despite limiting their opponent to just seven first-half field goals.“In the second quarter we could not buy a shot,” said Woodruff. “We had a couple good layups but we couldn’t knock them down.”Still, the Warriors weren’t out of contention.“I thought we did a pretty good trying to hold them in the third quarter,” said Woodruff. “We tried to dig ourselves out of the hole.”They opened the third quarter on an 8-0, and a three-pointer by sophomore Hannah Sutton would have cut the deficit to six, but she was ruled out of bounds on the attempt.“It seemed like we never recovered after that,” said Woodruff. “It was a make or break shot for us.”Warrenton trailed 32-17 after three quarters. The Warriors got to the line often but converted on just seven of 18 attempts.Senior Hannah Keene led the team with 11 points during her final contest.“She was patient on offense and got some good looks at the basket,” said Woodruff.Keene exited the game early with foul trouble, meaning the Warriors were without one of their best defenders.“When Hannah came out, they started to penetrate from the top,” said Woodruff. “We didn’t step over to help with Hannah on the bench.”Tyler Gregory scored five points, while senior Madie Heath netted one.
Sophomore Hannah Sutton and the Warrenton girls basketball team ended their season on Monday in a 49-24 loss to Duchesne during the first round of the Class 4 District 7 Tournament.
