Warrenton Girls Defeat Holt

Junior Hannah Sutton remembers a time when playing Holt wasn’t a welcoming thought. In fact, she vividly recalls strolling into the locker room disappointed, trailing 21-2 at halftime during last year’s meeting with the Wentzville school. So, admittedly, she says the outcome of Tuesday’s game was a surprise even to her and her teammates.Warrenton defeated Holt 67-57 on the heels of a balanced scoring effort, led by Sutton’s 23 points.“Walking into the locker room, we were like, ‘This is a shocker,’ ” acknowledged Sutton. “We thought they were going to walk all over us. But coach was like, ‘This is our house,’ and she was right.”While another year of experience has helped Sutton, the three-year starter says the addition of a standout freshman has been the ultimate difference-maker for the Warriors.Warrenton is off to a 3-1 start, and inside threat Jenny Jansen has averaged 18.5 points over the course of those four contests.“Jenny makes a big difference in the middle and on the press, because she can handle the ball,” said Coach Barb Woodruff. “When they collapse on her, she knows to give the ball to her teammates.”The sudden attention Jansen has demanded from opposing defenses has opened up Sutton and fellow junior Kylie Toebben for more free looks from the outside.“We work well together,” said Sutton. “If she’s not open, she feeds the ball back out. I do the same for her.”Toebben was the third scorer in double figures with 13 points, including a pair of threes.“When you add a third scorer, then they can’t key off on two people,” said Woodruff. Tuesday’s win also took patience and poise, something that has been limited for the Warriors in recent years. Warrenton didn’t break down after Holt drained five treys to go ahead 15-12 after the first quarter. The Warriors gained control in the second period, going ahead 29-23 at halftime.Holt attempted to rally in the fourth period, again looking to the long-range shot with three triples. But Warrenton was prepared to answer once the Indians closed to within eight.“We try to keep our girls calm, especially when we had that eight point lead,” said Woodruff. “We wanted to make sure we got a good shot, and we did. Last year we would have probably forced it last year.”Despite struggles at the line earlier in the season, the Warriors drained 15 of 19 free-throw attempts, including a perfect 12 of 12 in the fourth quarter. That was the difference-maker, says Woodruff.“That kept them at bay,” she said. “In the fourth quarter, we made our free throws, and they couldn’t catch up.”Woodruff says the 3-1 start is exciting for a program that has fallen below the .500 mark in recent years, but she also quick not too let her team become complacent.“It’s one game, so we don’t want to get too high or too low,” said Woodruff. “We want to keep coming to practice and improving different aspects of our game.”

Warrenton freshman Jenny Jansen is averaging 18.5 points through four games.
