An email in his inbox caught Warrenton girls track Coach Mike Spoede by surprise on Tuesday. He had come to terms with his team’s second-place finish at the GAC Conference meet on Friday. Initially disappointed, not in his team’s effort, but in the fact it wasn’t able to repeat as GAC champions for a second straight year, he consoled the athletes. But news came Tuesday that there had been a scoring error, and the Warriors indeed had finished first, edging St. Charles.“It was a euphoric state around here again,” said Spoede. “It was great to see the excitement in the girls as they heard the news.”Warrenton was led by junior Lalita Andrews, who won three events and finished second in another. She placed first in the 200-meter race with a time of 28.32 seconds.Andrews helped the 800-meter relay team, along with Rylie Cox, Emma Housewright and Dajah Ray, to a first-place finish in 1:55.Meanwhile, the 400-meter relay, consisting of the same group, finished second in 54.15 seconds.Andrews was also successful in the field events, winning the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 10 inches.“She had a really big day, as did the other sprinters in the sprint relay,” said Spoede. “They really shined.”Senior Madeline Carlson was able to finish her career as the conference champion in the two-mile race, clocking a 13:22. She finished just ahead of teammate Mary Broker, who ran a 13:30.Carlson placed third in the mile race, crossing in 5:51. Broker took fourth in 6:04.“Taking two first and a third was a great day for Maddie,” said Spoede. “She ran against some tough competition.”Sophomore Emma Housewright enjoyed a second-place finish in the 200-meter race and took third in the 100-meter race.Courtney Richardson placed second in both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Also earning all-conference honors for the Warriors was freshman Kayla Nelson, who placed second with a toss of 32 feet, 3 inches in the shot put.“As a coach, having 11 girls make all conference is a real milestone,” said Spoede. “They’ve performed and done what we’ve asked. I couldn’t be more pleased.”WARRIORS WIN GAC NORTHDerrick Forsythe photo.
