Warrenton football program continues to rise

Posted

The Warrenton football team’s season came to a close on Nov. 7 with a 49-3 loss to Odessa in a Class 4, District 5 semifinal game.

However, despite the loss, the Warriors have accomplished a rare feat in program history – three consecutive winning seasons.

The 2023-25 era marks just the third time in school history this has been done. Warrenton’s 7-4 mark this season capped their most successful run ever with 30 victories within the past three years.

“That’s good for the program and building for the future,” Warrenton coach Jason Koper said. “We’ve gotten to the point where our expectations are rising but to be able to stick together and really battle and fight through like we did against Marshall and get to that seventh win – that’s huge for the football program going forward.”

After the team’s season-ending loss, Koper made sure to remind his players how far they have come.

“We’ve kind of had a mindset change where not getting a conference championship, it feels a little bit like a let down or after having 11 or 12 wins the previous two years, seven wins can feel like a step back, but this is the best three years we’ve had in school history,” Koper said. “We have a lot of positives to build off of with a lot of young guys that stepped up and the seniors trying to rebound after what were almost impossible expectations to follow after what we did in 2024, so I’m proud of them.”

Koper credited the program’s rise to the weight room.

“When I took over and we lost to Troy and Hannibal, we got beat in the weight room and right now, we’re not losing the weight room battle,” Koper said. “The foundation for the football season is getting strong in the offseason and we’ve done a really good job at getting stronger.”

Beyond physicality, Koper said his team’s mental toughness stood out.

“After losing to Orchard Farm, we could have very easily given up, lost a couple of games and been done but we won those next two games. I am very proud of them for having the grit to get to those seven wins,” Koper said.

Koper acknowledged the seniors' roles, praising the stability of three-year starters and the new talent that broke out this season.

“A lot of those guys kind of had to wait their turn because our class of 2025 was so good and they made the most of it. They were all flexible and bounced around where we needed them,” Koper said. “So when you get over the fact that we lost the last game and look at some of their accomplishments, these guys have really had a good four years and given us a lot to build off of going into the next football season.”

Koper is hoping that the built foundation will carry on into the next season.

“You can’t get to four winning seasons if you don’t get to the three first,” Koper said. “Now it’s back to the offseason. We’ve got to get to work and start preparing for the 2026 football season.”
