By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
It was difficult for Coach Steve McDowell to watch his team unravel during a dismal 48-0 defeat at St. Charles West on Friday.Warrenton self-destructed on many fronts, throwing five interceptions and committing a wealth of penalties.“We came out and committed two penalties on the first two plays of the game,” said McDowell.Still, the Warriors didn’t fall out of contention until the second quarter. After St. Charles West jumped ahead 7-0 on a 55-yard run, the Warriors had consecutive chances with opportune field position.Dillen Mayfield missed a 24-yard field goal attempt with 4:12 remaining in the first quarter, but Warrenton promptly regained possession after Jacob Abel snagged an interception at midfield. The Warriors then began experiencing their own passing problems, throwing three interceptions to close out half. All resulted in points and one was returned for a 31-yard touchdown.“We had so many interceptions, whether it was tipped off a receivers fingers or just bad passes,” said McDowell. “We can’t do that and expect to stay in the ballgame.”St. Charles West added the shortest of its scoring plays, a five-yard pass, to go ahead 35-0 with less than a minute remaining in the half.“We got to the ball, but we just didn’t finish them off with good defensive plays,” said McDowell.St. Charles West opened the second half by returning another interception for a 31-yard touchdown and finished off the scoring with a 47-yard run.McDowell says his team was making a talented opponent look invincible.“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” said McDowell. “We didn’t execute anything we had worked on.”Warrenton managed only 164 total yards of offense, including just 55 on the ground.Braydan Chmiel had a team-best six carries for 19 yards and went nine of 22 passing, throwing a pair of interceptions. He amassed 99 throwing yards.Zach Logan was one of four, throwing three picks.Ryan Bradshaw and Luke Darity each caught four passes for the Warriors.Craig Vardiman and Dylan Pyatt each had a team-best four tackles for Warrenton.“We just didn’t come out ready to play tonight,” said McDowell. “We have to find a group of kids that are going to be consistent.”
