The Warrenton football program concluded its summer team activities with a four-day camp at the high school last week.More than 60 high school players attended the camp, which ran every day but Wednesday.“I thought we had a good week at camp,” Head Coach Steve McDowell said. “We beat the heat by going earlier in the morning, and we’ve been able to avoid the heat most of the summer, which is good. We averaged 60-65 kids each day, so our participation was good. I think we’ll get a few more to come out once our first day of practice gets underway next week.”The Warriors begin their fall practices Monday at 7 a.m., and will have less than three weeks before their first game of the season, an Aug. 18 home contest against Wentzville Liberty.Liberty won last year’s opener, 23-6, but McDowell hopes the summer workouts will have his team ready in three weeks.“It’s really a great way to get us back into football mode, that way once we get to the 31st, we’re not as focused on the fundamentals,” he said of the camp. “You still have to work on them every day, but now we can hammer out the scheme. Our first game is the 18th, and you have to be ready for that first game. We did a lot of conditioning at camp to get us in tip-top shape heading into the 18th.”McDowell expects another 10 or so players to show up at Monday’s practice, giving his team between 70-75 players.“We’ll be down a little bit from where we’ve been the last few years, but that’s where every school is at right now,” he said. “There are a lot of kids at every school that aren’t coming out and playing, but it is what it is. I want the kids that want to be out there playing. If your hearts not in it, there’s no need to put the work into it.”McDowell estimated that 50-60 players showed up each available day to practices or the weight room this summer, and he thinks the results will begin to show on the field next month.“I think we had a good summer,” he said. “Our numbers were good every day. I thought our Southeast Missouri State camp went really well, too. So overall I think we had a really good program this summer.”.GETTING MORE REPS — Warrenton offensive and defensive lineman work on a drill during a practice earlier in the summer.
