By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
A week after a dismal performance against Washington, the Warrenton defense was prepared to redeem itself on Homecoming. The Warriors shut out St. Charles for three quarters during a 21-7 victory on Friday.“That was a big victory for us,” said Coach Steve McDowell. “The kids played great.”Warrenton showcased its most complete performance of the season, executing well in all areas — minus a pair of blocked kicks on special teams.“Defensively, I couldn’t ask for more,” acknowledged McDowell. “They really rebounded and responded. We had come back and worked on tackling a lot over the past week. We weren’t being very physical, but Friday night we came out flying to the football.”The Warriors held St. Charles to just 23 rushing yards on 14 carries and a total of 158 yards. The defense forced a season-best three interceptions.“Our pursuit to the ball was tremendously better than the previous week,” asserted McDowell. “We were always in position to make the plays.”Offensively, Warrenton was focused on controlling the clock with its running game, which had been sporadic at best this season.Against St. Charles, five different players ran the ball to the tune of 186 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors used both quarterbacks, Braydan Chmiel and Zach Logan, as running weapons.Logan led the team with 73 yards on 18 carries, while senior Drake Wagner had 64 yards on 16 touches. After the Warriors’ long first drive stalled out, Wagner capped off the second possession with a seven-yard run with 1:21 remaining in the opening period.“We were able to go down and score on our second drive and that set the tone for us,” said McDowell. “We had the ball so much on offense, we didn’t have to throw a lot of passes and were able to run.”Wagner scored again on a six-yard run near the end of the second quarter."Drake was very effective getting to the outside where he’s good,” said McDowell. “He utilizes that speed to get to the edges.”The defense continued its solid effort in the second half.“Defensively, we played a tremendous game all night,” said McDowell. “We really hunkered down.”Both teams fell short of the end zone in the third quarter.Senior Corey Eckenfels punched in the Warriors’ final touchdown on a five-yard run with 2:06 remaining.“Corey had a very nice night running the ball and blocking,” said McDowell. “He performed very well.”St. Charles’ only score came on a pass play with 1:17 left in the contest.Warrenton limited its passing, with Logan going three of eight for 34 yards.Chmiel finished four of six for 65 yards.Senior Luke Darity returned to the field after missing the Washington game with an ankle injury. He had three catches for 32 yards.Junior Ryan Bradshaw hauled in a pair of catches for 43 yards.Trevor Reese led the defense with six tackles.
Warrenton senior Drake Wagner ran for 64 yards against St. Charles.
