The Warrenton football team finished its preparations Wednesday morning for the Southeast Missouri State team camp this week in Cape Girardeau.
The Warriors traveled to Cape Thursday afternoon to scrimmage against teams from St. Louis and southeast Missouri.
“We’re looking forward to going down to Cape and seeing where we are at as a team,” Head Coach Steve McDowell said. “We’ve been going up against each other for the last week-and-a-half, and it will be good to get a gauge of where we are at by going against some different competition. We see some good competition down there and there is some great competition in that part of the state.”
The Warriors faced Sikeston, Cape Central and New Madrid County Thursday, and were set to play and Mehlville and Jackson Friday morning.
McDowell expect nearly three dozen of his players to make the trip, which will include varsity and junior varsity members.
“We’ll get 15 varsity plays and about eight J.V. plays, so every kid is going to get reps,” he said. “And they’re going against their own level of competition also, so that is good.”
It will be the second consecutive summer Warrenton has participated in the camp.
“Normally we’ve gone up to the University of Missouri, but we decided to try something different,” McDowell said. “We thought the price was good, and you get down there and get six scrimmages. We get three Thursday evening, wake up Friday morning and get three more. And by 12:30, we’re done. So it’s kind of nice. It’s short and sweet and we get a lot out of it. This one is a little bit later than some other camps, but it gives you more time to prep, which is good.”
