The Warrenton football team went for the win on the road last night – but came up on the short end of a 41-40 score.
The Warriors, playing at conference rival Orchard Farm, went for a 2-point conversion in overtime after an Eli Schneider 2-yard run on the first possession, but failed in the attempt.
Orchard Farm then scored and won the game with a conventional extra point.
The PAT ended what was a wild affair with points galore and multiple lead changes.
Warrenton (3-3) needed a late score to force overtime as a Schneider 2-yard run with 15 seconds tied the game at 34.
The first of Schneider’s three 2-yard scoring runs came with 5:35 left in the third quarter to give Warrenton the 28-18 lead before Orchard Farm (4-2) stormed back.
Warrenton led 21-12 at halftime.
The Warriors had a 30-yard pass from Mason Sanders to Jordan Lopez open the scoring with 8:37 left in the first, then increased the lead to 14-6 on a Lopez 16-yard run with 1:29 left in the opening quarter and, finally, moved out to the 21-12 lead when a Bradley Tucker 1-yard run capped the first-half scoring with 5:44 left to play in the second quarter.
The win for Orchard Farm was the second in succession over Warrenton, as the Eagles won 49-27 at Warrenton last season.
Next week, Warrenton will return home to celebrate Homecoming when the team welcomes Winfield (3-3) at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Throughout the last 27 years, Warrenton has a 15-2 record against Winfield.
That includes four straight wins, with the most recent coming last year at Winfield, 40-15.
