The Warrenton Lady Warriors pulled even with St. Charles West in the second half Tuesday, but ultimately fell in a penalty shootout.
After allowing a goal in the first minute of the game, the Lady Warriors tied the game in the second half with just over 17 minutes remaining. The game eventually went to a penalty shootout after there was no scoring the rest of the second half and overtime. The teams were tied 1-1 heading into the shootout. St. Charles West converted on two penalty kicks, while Warrenton converted on one penalty kick.
Sophomore Camryn Petersmeyer scored for the Warriors on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute. The goal tied the game at one. Warrenton was awarded a penalty kick because Kylie Overkamp was tripped in the box. She was tripped shortly after Coryn Higby’s shot hit the crossbar.
St. Charles West took an early lead in the game. They scored in the first minute of the game to claim an early lead. St. Charles West had a chance to expand their lead in the first half. Warrenton goalie Emily Beumel stopped a penalty kick attempt to keep the game within one goal.
Warrenton soccer coach Amy Wargowsky believes the Lady Warriors played better in the second half than they did in the first half.
“We started to have more opportunities,” Wargowsky said. “We just couldn’t find the back of the net. But I was proud about how they were bringing the ball down and making the right passes.”
St. Charles West goalie Sequoia Ross started off the penalty shootout and scored on Beumel. Petersmeyer tied the shootout by scoring on Ross. St. Charles West and Warrenton each kicked the ball over the crossbar on their second attempts to keep the shootout score tied 1-1. St. Charles West freshman Riley McGuire scored on the third attempt for St. Charles West to give them a 2-1 shootout lead they would not relinquish. Beumel stopped the remaining two shot attempts to give Warrenton a chance to tie the shootout score. After Ross stopped shot attempts to both her right and left, Warrenton senior Isabella Roberts had a chance to tie the score. She missed the goal to the right and St. Charles West won the shootout 2-1.
“It’s completely different when it’s in a game and it comes down to you’re taking it for the game,” Wargowsky said. “When Camryn (Petersmeyer) took the one in the game, it’s a little different than when it comes to a PK shootout for who wins. It’s a whole different ballgame and nerves can get you. But I’m proud of how they did. And they all went out. They did their best.”
Warrenton will get a chance to avenge the loss later this year. They are scheduled to play at St. Charles West April 14.
“We play them again because of conference,” Wargowsky said. “So we play home and away. So I’m really looking forward to seeing them again. And hopefully the outcome will be different.”
Warrenton is scheduled to play at St. Charles High School Tuesday.
