Warrenton expands FACS program to meet demand

In response to an overwhelming interest by students, the Warren County R-III School District will hire a second Family and Consumer Science teacher for Warrenton High School. The board approved the staff addition during its monthly regular session meeting June 1, after 434 students expressed an interest in taking those courses.“We had such a high number of students requesting to be in that program for next year, and we currently had only one teacher,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Aaron Jones. The program’s previous teacher, Judy Folsom, was one of six employees who retired from the district following the 2016-17 school year.Jones says the district had to get creative in filling some voids and accommodating the programs. Some restructuring will take place, including integration of the agriculture teachers into other curriculum.“We currently have a lower number of students enrolling in those agriculture classes for some reason, so we’re trying to grow that program back up by offering a couple of sections at the middle school level,” said Jones. “We’re hoping that will bring some interest back to the program at the high school level as a result.”The high school agriculture teachers will instruct those middle school courses, along with a section of the Project Lead the Way Biomedical Science curriculum.“By doing that we were able to free up a teaching position that we could apply toward the FACS department,” said Jones. The FACS program at Warrenton High School currently offers courses in Culinary Arts, Child Development, Housing and Interior Design, Real World Living and Nutrition and Wellness.School
