Warrenton Ends Playoff Drought

Posted

After facing the gauntlet in the postseason for two straight years, the Warrenton football program has finally taken its next step toward prominence. The Warriors downed Duchesne 38-13 on Wednesday in a MSHSAA Class 4 Regional Playoff, led by senior quarterback Scotty Lathrop with a game-high 141 yards on 23 carries. Warrenton overcame four turnovers, including three interceptions, to cruise past the Pioneers for the second time this season. After falling behind 7-0 midway through the first quarter, the Warriors used runs by Lathrop and junior Austin Black to regain control. Junior Nick Todd then set the tone on the next drive, breaking free for a 62-yard touchdown that developed off a short pass play. Duchesne pulled to within one possession on a field goal in the third quarter, but Lathrop responded with another scoring run. A solid defensive effort and precise kicking by Darren Hackmann helped the Warriors polish off their first playoff win since 1998. Wright City also advanced, defeating Southern Boone 44-22 in a Class 3 Regional. The Wildcats will travel to Bowling Green on Monday at 7 p.m.
