Warrenton Duo Named All-State

By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
Their names are similar and their games have been equally impacting. One has left her legacy and the other is still building hers.Jennah Garrison and Jenny Jansen left such a resounding impression on critics this season that they were recently named to the Class 3 All-State Softball Team. For Garrison, it was a tremendous honor to conclude a decorated four-year varsity career.Jansen, meanwhile, plans to use this as a catapult into the next three seasons.“Having Jennah on the team, I looked up to her,” said Jansen. “Since she’s leaving, I know I’m going to have to be the next one to step up. I just hope to keep the softball team strong for the next couple years.”The freshman hit an astonishing team-best .513 with 41 hits and 30 RBIs during the Warriors’ record-breaking 22-win season.“Toward the beginning of the season I was hitting really well and felt like I could hit against anybody,” said Jansen. “Near the end of the season I was a little less aggressive and that may have hurt me.”Despite her impressive numbers, her goal was merely to be named to the All-GAC Team, which she also did.“Honestly, I was not expecting it at all,” acknowledged Jansen. “Considering I was a freshman, I didn’t think I had a chance because you don’t see too many freshmen making all-state. I was thrilled.”Garrison was consistently a strong hitter through four seasons, batting .446 with 33 base knocks during her senior campaign. She also recorded 35 RBIs, a product of her team-high eight home runs.“I think my hitting got better with each season,” said Garrison. “This season I saw the ball a lot better and hit for more power.”She too, was caught off guard. Not since Lindsay Mauch earned the honor two years ago, had the Warriors boasted an all-state selection.“It was very exciting, because it was unexpected for me and came as a surprise,” said Garrison. Both Jansen and Garrison were incredible resources in the field as well.Garrison was immediately cast into a starting pitching role as a freshman and tossed 108 innings this fall, sporting a 2.07 ERA. She struck out 79 batters while walking 13.“I think my pitching was strongest this season as far as being healthy,” said Garrison. “I think with my ERA I did a better job of keeping those numbers low.”Jansen had previously played shortstop for her select team, but with a reliable senior returning to that role, she was forced to fill a vacancy in the outfield. The plays that Jansen made in centerfield astonished Hibbs throughout the season.“It was nice to go to centerfield, because it’s more relaxing,” said Jansen. “As shortstop, you’re pretty much the leader of the infield, but in centerfield you don’t have as many responsibilities.”She made critical game-saving catches against St. Dominic and during the district championship game versus Bowling Green.“Jenny is going to be the leader of this team,” said Garrison. “It’s exciting to what she’s already accomplished at 14 years old. Being a four-year varsity player definitely made me grow up really quickly...”Now it’s Jansen’s turn.
Warrenton freshman Jenny Jansen was one of two Warriors named to the All-State team.
