Warrenton dog kennel plans big expansion

The aaCanine Country Club dog kennel near Warrenton is planning a big expansion for big dogs. The owners of the kennel have received the go-ahead to add a 300-square-foot addition to their facility on Highway 47 just south of the city. The Warren County Planning and Zoning Commission had to approve that change to the property. Boarding space for animals will almost double, from 11 indoor/outdoor dog runs to 19.Notably, aaCanine Country Club will soon be able to accommodate any size of dog.“Half of the clients who come to visit our facility do not use us because our pet enclosures can accommodate only the smaller breeds comfortably,” owner Frim Andrews said in his application for the expansion.“The addition might double our gross income because we could then accommodate the owners of large dogs.”The application also notes that aaCanine plans to begin offering grooming services independent of boarding animals. Grooming was only offered to boarded dogs at first, but owners frequently returned just for grooming, Andrews said.Andrews also requested to add cat boarding to the allowable use for the property for customers who own both kinds of animals. In addition, he proposed doubling the size of the kennel’s exercise yard.Planning and zoning commissioners were receptive to approving the building expansion, especially since the initial conditional use permit for the business already included approval for up to 20 dogs.Commissioners added two additional, non-dog pets to the allowable boarding at the kennel, intended to accommodate cat owners. The aaCanine owners also are allowed to keep up to seven personal dogs on the property.Commissioners were not keen, however, to green light a larger exercise yard so close to several neighboring properties. The kennel won’t be allowed to expand yard space for its boarded dogs, but separate fencing can be put up to prevent intrusion onto the property, commissioners decided. The building expansion request otherwise was approved without modification. The original conditional use permit for aaCanine Country Club was approved in 2013, and the business has been open since 2015, according to Planning and Zoning Administrator Toni Eversmeyer.
