Warrenton Cross Country Seeks New State Qualifiers

Mike Spoede is used to playing the numbers game. Each August the Warrenton coach has the uncertainty of not knowing how many students will venture out to cross country practice. With four other sports being played during the same season, it can be difficult to field a full varsity roster. This fall Spoede has the numbers, but he doesn’t necessarily have the experience.Contrary to most years, the Warriors return just one state qualifier.Beyond junior Madeline Carlson, there are several seasoned runners looking to break new career thresholds. After a disappointing finish at state last November, staying injury-free will be instrumental for Carlson.“Coming off of a track season and being a state qualifier as an individual kind of shows the level of talent she has,” said Spoede. “We want her to stay away from twisted ankles.”Junior Jacey Clemens returns for another year with the program.“We hope to put together a team as the season goes along,” said Spoede. “Our freshmen and sophomores are very unproven.”Spoede is always reluctant to mention newcomers by name, but he acknowledges being optimistic about the potential of the freshman class. The boys team boasts more returners but no district medalists, so the opportunity for a breakout season exists.“On the boys side, it’s a building and recruiting year,” said Spoede. “We still have the hopes of taking someone to state.”Seniors Jacob Ruby and Austin Adams are entering their fourth year in the program, along with third-year competitor Tristan Cullom.“These three are pretty much going to be the mainstay,” said Spoede. “Austin is a great leader for us.”There are nine runners on the boys team, with the majority being newcomers.“After the three seniors, we’re going to be pretty young to fill the varsity,” said Spoede.Warrenton will begin the season at the Fleet Feet meet at Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Warrenton junior Madeline Carlson is the Warriors' only returning state qualifier this season.
