Warrenton Competes at GAC Tournament

Hardware was extremely limited for the Warrenton wrestling team on Saturday. The Warriors had just one medalist prevail during an extremely competitive GAC Tournament at Zumwalt North.“The competition is the greatest we’ll see all year as a whole,” said Coach Kevin Fowler. “It’s even tougher than our district, and it prepares those guys for the matches that are going to get them through to the state tournament.”Sophomore Dan Filipek found his way into the finals matches, placing sixth after finishing 3-2 in the 145-pounddivision. But the remainder of his teammates made early exits during the double elimination tournament.“Dan’s entire bracket was stacked,” said Fowler. “It may have been better than what we’ll see at the state level.”Filipek opened with a 9-0 major decision over Michael Barnett of St. Charles West, before losing 3-1 against Holt’s Austin Keller. He was able to win his first wrestleback match by pinning Mason Kestner of St. Charles but saw his day come to a close against Howell’s Brock Fisher.“Dan actually wrestled great,” said Fowler. “He was in every match.”Dylan Wade made a valiantrun at 152 pounds, going 2-2 but falling short of the trophy rounds. He pinned his first opponent, Tommy Mathews of Winfield, in just 15 seconds.Wade then lost to Sky Darrah of Timberland by technical fall, shuffling into the consolation bracket. Once there, he defeated his first opponent before falling to a second.“Dylan wrestled really well, despite being ill and injured,” said Fowler. “He’d probably practiced once in two weeks.”Dominic Kennedy dropped his first match at 106 pounds, before making a temporary run at 106 pounds. He defeated Michael Chalcraft of Howell Central by fall in 2:39, before losing to Cody Hey of Washington.“Dominic wrestled had a decent weekend of wrestling,” said Fowler.Four other Warrenton competitors were unable to claim a victory in the tournament, going 0-2 for an early exit.Senior Dakota Werner couldn’t make a run in the 126-pound bracket, losing his first match by fall and second by decision.Werner has been wrestling up a weight class during much of the season and is expected to drop back down to 120 pounds prior to the district tournament.“He’d been wrestling up to help the team out and create a slot for one of our other guys,” said Fowler. “He’s weighing in at weight for the class underneath him, and you can’t do that against state level competition.”Also going 0-2 were Drake Meine at 132 pounds, James Biship at 138 pounds and Jacob Manion at 182 pounds.Fowler says Wade and Bennett were probably the biggest surprises of the event.“Dylan has been doing a good job all year, and he came and wrestled hard,” said Fowler. “He and Dominic showed well against real good competition. Dylan was probably the most impressive just because of his lack of experience.”“We’re definitely not satisfied,” added Fowler, whose team travels to the St. Charles Tournament this weekend. “We didn’t perform great, but it was a good test for our guys to show them where they’re at.”
Warrenton wrestler Dylan Wade went 2-2 during the GAC Tournament last weekend.
