Warrenton boys’ volleyball sets program win record

Posted

In just its second season, the Warrenton boys volleyball team has reached uncharted waters.

With the team’s 25-22, 25-22, 25-16 win over Holt on Tuesday at home, Warrenton (6-9-1) has already eclipsed the number of wins the team had in its inaugural season when the team finished 5-12.

Sophomore Lucas Payne (12 kills) and senior Teegan Williams (eight kills) teamed up to terrorize the Indians’ defense. Williams’ 204 kills amassed through Tuesday rank him seventh in the St. Louis area.

Williams and junior Matthew Faubion also led the team with two blocks apiece, while Faubion’s 17 assists paced the Warriors.

Coach Jake Brown said that, while achieving the program record for wins was nice, it isn’t everything. The coach said that the team aims to finish strong and, hopefully, will find itself above another important threshold.

“It feels great that we're getting close to our goal this year,” Brown said. “Our goal is to be .500 or better. The boys have been doing a great job. We have been calling them the super seven because we are down to seven healthy guys on varsity.”

The win marked back-to-back wins for the team, which, after a four-game win streak earlier in the season, is poised for more success, with the next three scheduled games against Fort Zumwalt South (Thursday), Chesterton Academy (April 27), and Fort Zumwalt East (April 28).

Warrenton owns wins over each of the teams from games played earlier this season.

MARTIN’S BIG DAY LEADS WILDCATS TO CONFERENCE WIN – Tyler Martin drove in four runs as the Wright City baseball team rolled to the 15-1 win over Eastern Missouri Conference rival Mark Twain at home on Tuesday.

The sophomore went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace Wright City (9-8).

After Martin singled to lead off the bottom of the first and came around to score on an error, sophomore Leighton McDonald launched a three-run home run to centerfield to provide the Wildcats all the runs the team would need.

Junior Brayden Niemann tossed the complete-game, five-hitter to earn the win for Wright City.

The Wildcats will next head to South Callaway for a game tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

WARRENTON RUNS WIN STREAK TO THREE – Junior Ric Standley had three hits in four at-bats, including a pair of triples, as the host Warriors got past Winfield 6-3.

Standley tripled in the fourth and sixth innings as Warrenton tacked onto its lead.

A first-inning run was followed by two in the second for Warrenton before Winfield got one back.

Warrenton (8-7) added two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth to round out the scoring.  Junior Keeton Young earned the win.

The teams return to the diamond today at Winfield for a game scheduled to start at 4:15.

WARREN COUNTY RIVALRY HEADS TO PITCH – The Wright City and Warrenton girls soccer teams will renew acquaintances at 6 p.m. tonight when the Warriors play host.

Wright City (6-3) and Warrenton (0-6) have played six times previously, with each side winning three, including the Wildcats’ 1-0 at Warrenton last season.
