The Warrenton boys track team won its second straight Crusader Invitational with a dominant performance Friday afternoon at St. Dominic.

The Warriors finished with 137 points, 35 points more than second-place finisher O’Fallon Christian.

“It’s a great feeling,” Warrenton Head Coach Steven McDowell said. “The kids really performed well and we really scored points in a lot of different areas, and when you’re scoring points in a meet like that, it’s huge.”

Warrenton won five events and had 12 other individuals or teams finish in the top five in their respective events.

The Warriors were led by their relay teams, which won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 races.

Senior Jacob Crump ran the final leg of the 1,600 relay, and made up nearly 25 meters on Trinity Catholic’s Darion Bolden during his lap.

“When he got the baton, you could just kind of see him gaining and gaining,” McDowell said. “That’s such an exciting race to finish it off, and Crump just had a heck of a night.”

Crump also won the 200 dash and 300 hurdles.

His 300 hurdles time of 40.71 was nearly four seconds better than Orchard Farm’s Jordan Forsythe, who finished second.

Freshman Isaac Frederick ran in the 3,200 relay and finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:10.77.

Fellow freshman Nathan Nordwald ran the first leg of the 3,200 relay and finished second in the 1,600 (4:55.20) and 3,200 (10:44.43).

In the field events, junior Paul Lanigan picked up a fourth-place finish in the long jump and a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, collecting nine points for the Warriors.

Junior Turner Blake cleared 10 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to finish third, and juniors Roberto Varnado (40-11 3/4) and Wyatt Wielms (38-11) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put.

Wielms added a third-place finish in the discus with a final toss of 117-8.

“Our throwers just kept doing what they’ve been doing,” McDowell said. “It was a meet where they really matched up well with everybody. I told them if they can P.R. every single time, they’ll continue to see themselves at the top of the standings.”

The Warriors will compete in the Wright City Invitational Thursday before heading to Washington Tuesday for the Russell C. Nix Relays.

McDowell hopes the momentum from Friday’s performance will continue to carry his team through April.

“They put a lot of work into this,” he said. “Being able to put up points in our second medal meet was huge, and hopefully we can continue doing that.”
