The Warrenton boys track team took a serious step up in competition last week at the annual Fort Zumwalt North Invitational.
The Warriors finished sixth overall, behind larger schools like Battle, Northwest, Zumwalt North and Holt.
“I think it was a great meet for us to be in,” Warrenton Head Coach Steve McDowell said. “It gives us an opportunity to see some bigger schools and how we stack up against them.”
Mason Miller continued to work toward returning to his state-qualifying performance in the pole vault.
The junior finished ninth overall with a final height of 11 feet.
He cleared 11-6 the week prior at Wright City, and hit 12-6 at last year’s district meet.
“Mason has really worked to get back into the 12-foot range,” McDowell said. “I believe he’ll clear that this week, and If he can become consistent with 12 feet, I think 13 is just around the corner.”
The 800- and 1,600-meter relay teams picked up a combined 16 points for their team, finishing second in both races.
“Those groups just keep performing,” McDowell said. “We are working to get the times down a bit to be competitive in the post-season.”
The 1,600 team of Dylan Chandler, Andrew Hodgson, Brandon Molinari and Paul Sanders has the third-best time this season among Class 4, District 4 competitors, according to trxctiming.com.
Chandler, Dylan Smith, Brenden Smith and Sam Smith are currently fifth in the district in the 800 relay, and the top four district finishers advance to the sectional meet the following week.
Dylan Smith also helped out in the long jump Friday, finishing fourth overall with a distance of 19 feet, 6 1/2 inches.
His personal-best distance of 20 feet is good enough for fourth in the district.
“Dylan has really excelled in the long jump,” McDowell said. “He cleared 20 at the Washington meet and continues to get stronger, and I think he has an opportunity to make a strong run in a few weeks.”
Josh Heap finished third in the discus (117-3 1/2) and eighth in the shot put (38-9) while setting personal-bests in both events.
“Heap continues to P.R. at every meet,” McDowell said. “He has really worked hard to increase his speed through the ring.”
Other notable finishes included Ben Sommer and Nathan Nordwald in the 3,200 (third and fourth respectively), and Nolan Chmiel and Chandler in the 200 (fifth and sixth).
The Warriors return to the track Friday for the Warrenton Invitational.
“We are always excited about our home meet,” McDowell said. “We look to have great weather, and anticipate a great meet.”
