Following a breakthrough year in which the Warrenton boys track team brought home three state medals, Coach Steve McDowell is hoping to build on those strong events. It will take some rebuilding though, and that will start with senior Jordon Washington.“We’ve got some kids that are going to be hard to replace,” said McDowell.Washington returns after finishing fourth in the 100-meter race at state and will be the foundation of the Warriors’ sprint relay teams. He and junior Justin McBroom are the only returning members of the 800-meter relay team which medaled at state. McDowell hopes to find the missing links to rebuild both the 800- and 400-meter teams.“Hopefully we can find the right guys to fill in and continue that success we experienced last year,” said McDowell. “Jordon has been working extremely hard, and we’re expecting great leadership from him.”Warrenton could also potentially see points from its pole vaulters, who progressed exceptionally well last season.Seniors Caleb Hodgson and Jared Kilpack both experienced success in the pole vault and have their sights set on reaching state.“They’re getting themselves prepared to compete very well in an event they’ve put a lot of work into,” said McDowell. Also returning with the proven success is Dane Huck, whose primary event is the high jump. He is a prime candidate to fill in on those sprint relay teams.Following in the footsteps of his brother Brian, who graduated after a trip to state in the triple jump, junior Paul Lanigan hopes to make his own name as a jumper.“His goal is to break his brother’s records, and if he can do that, he will have been a very valuable asset for us,” said McDowell. “We’re happy to have him out this year.”He is also expecting big contributions from senior Brian Sanders, who is returning as a middle distance runner.“He’s coming back as one of our top 800 runners and should also be a leader on our 4x400-meter relay team,” said McDowell.Returning in the throwing events are Dylan Pyatt and Nick Boling.“Dylan will be our top guy in the shot put, and Nick should be one of our top discus throwers,” said McDowell.Outside of the returners, the Warriors also have several newcomers whom McDowell expects to make an impact.Among them are freshmen Dylan Chandler and Randy McRoberts and junior Braydan Chmiel, who will all be contributors in the track events.WARRIORS LED BY WASHINGTONDerrick Forsythe photo.
