The Warrenton boys track team went without representation at the MSHSAA Championships last season. Coach Steve McDowell is confident his sprinters can change that this season. The Warriors have healthier numbers this season, with 30 athletes filling the roster. Ten of those are newcomers. “We’re very excited about those numbers,” acknowledged McDowell. Among the most proven are senior Devin Ray and sophomore Jordon Washington, who narrowly missed a trip to state last season. Both are standouts in the 100- and 200-meter races. “He’s looking strong again in the 100 and 200,” said McDowell of Ray. Washington experienced success during the offseason on the amateur Olympic circuit. He and Ray will also be pivotal members of the 400- and 800-meter relay teams. Newcomer Drake Wagner could also emerge as a talent in the sprint events. “We should have a pair of strong relay teams if we’re able to find a fourth kid,” said McDowell. “We’re looking for the sprint events to be our strength again this year.” Senior Nick Wallace also has high expectations entering the season. He has experienced past success in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, setting a new school record in the 300. “He’s off to a solid start after having surgery, and we’re anticipating this to be a breakout year for him,” said McDowell. “We’d like to see him reach state during his final season.” Senior Cloud Wharton is looking to enjoy an injury-free season to cap off an accomplished career that has often required overcoming pain from nagging ailments. He will lead the Warriors in the distance events. “I think he’ll be successful, and we can always count on him for some team points,” said McDowell. The field events are deep with options, but limited in postseason success. “We’ve got a couple of good pole vaulters coming back from last year,” said McDowell. Junior Jacob Hickl is a third-year pole vaulter, while sophomore Caleb Hogdson is looking to make strides in the event. “Both are looking good early,” added McDowell. The throwers include seniors Jeff Reese and Brett Garrison, while Logan Shay and Eddie Sanchez provide depth. “It will be real good competition among those guys,” said McDowell. The varsity jumping roles will be handled by junior Brian Lanigan and freshman Justin McBroom. “We’re excited about what we’ve seen from those guys early on,” said McDowell. Additionally, the Warriors will look to senior Forrest Curtis as a fourth-year competitor in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Juniors Jacob Ruby and Tristan Cullom will also represent the varsity team in the distance events.
