Warrenton boys finish fourth at Fulton

Record Managing EditorNathan Nordwald overcame a brief fall to capture a medal at the Fulton Invitational as the Warrenton boys cross country team wound up fourth Saturday.A teammate got his feet tangled with Nordwald in the opening mile of the 3.1-mile race, causing him to fall. The setback didn’t phase the freshman much, however, as he quickly got back up and continued running. Nordwald completed the race in 17 minutes, 44.20 seconds as he placed 20th overall. Kirksville senior Duncan Clark won the race in 16:27.62.Warrenton had 168 points to finish fourth out of 25 schools in the team standings. Fatima had five of its runners place in the top 13 and easily won the team title with 44 points. Hannibal was runner-up with 105 points, ahead of Helias with 129.Dylan Chandler was the second-quickest runner for the Warriors, placing 28th in 17:57.75. Teammate James Goetz followed in 30th in 17:58.42.Others in the race were Randy McRoberts (45th, 18:27.17), Matthew Hackmann (56th, 18:44.60) and Ben Hoelscher (101st, 19:50.97).“Having three of them under 18 minutes is a positive sign,” Warrenton Head Coach Jeremy Collins said. “Randy wasn’t too far out of our top three, but he still continues to improve his times from last year. Matthew Hackman also had a great race, breaking 19 (minutes) for the first time in his career. It is good to see our top five being separated by one minute, which is our strength as a team.”In the girls race, Warrenton junior Andrea Poole just missed medaling by four seconds. She finished the race in 27th place with a time of 21:30.41.The top 25 runners earned medals. Anna Massman, of Fatima, won the race in 18:24.56.Other runners for the Warriors were Mary Broker (41st, 22:20.29), Meagan Sanders (67th, 23:45.78), Madison Stevens (95th, 24:50.81) and Emma Housewright (110th, 25:32.92). This was Housewright’s first varsity event of the year as she filled in for Darya Wilke, normally the team’s third-best runner, who was out with a knee injury.As a team, Warrenton placed 10th with 270 points. Fatima won the team crown with 46 points, followed by Helias (52), Troy (126), Moberly (135) and Bowling Green (136).“When I keep seeing their times come down and the effort they are putting into the season, I’m happy for them because they are working so hard,” Collins said. “It is everyone on the team working hard and having a good attitude that contributes to the team success.”Warrenton will be hosting its home invitational this Friday at the high school.JV boys resultsIn Saturday’s junior varsity boys race, Warrenton’s Michael Hackmann led the team with a 45th-place finish in 21:27.17.Other runners for the Warriors were Ben Chilson (60th, 22:25.08), Blake Turner (86th, 24:22.73), Ben McBride (90th, 24:44.92) and Brady Weir (99th, 25:46.89).As a team, Warrenton placed eighth out of nine teams.Warriors
