UNION – A career-high 25 points by senior guard Travis Toebben wasn’t enough firepower to push the Warriors past Rockwood Summit in the opening round of the 58th annual Union Invitational Tournament Monday night.

In the first-ever meeting between the teams, the No. 4 seeded Falcons from Fenton prevailed 58-53.

No. 5 Warrenton trailed 16-10 after a quarter and cut its deficit to 25-21 at halftime before Summit took a 40-33 lead into the final period.

Toebben knocked down 7-of-12 3-point attempts and has 13 treys in his last two games.

But the Warriors were less efficient from inside the arc. They shot 24.2 percent (8-for-33) on two-pointers and finished the night at a 31.6 clip (18-for-57) overall from the floor.

Senior point guard Brett Smith also recorded double digits for Warrenton, scoring 14 points and adding five assists and three rebounds.

Senior forward Sam Toenges had eight points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Fellow senior Brenden Day chipped in with four points and five boards and junior Andrew Cox tallied two points and 10 rebounds.

The Falcons, whose soccer team won the Class 3 state championship in double overtime last fall, improved to 9-7 overall with their tourney triumph, while the Warriors suffered their fifth consecutive setback in dropping to 6-8 overall. Though it’s worth noting that four of the losses in the streak have been by single digits.

In the other opening round games of the Union Invitational, No. 1 Washington beat the No. 8 host Wildcats 44-38; No. 2 Borgia smashed No. 7 KIPP 61-26 and No. 3 Ft. Zumwalt South defeated No. 6 Lutheran South 54-39.

The Warriors will look to get back on track in the consolation bracket when they take on Union at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Wildcats are 2-11 overall on the campaign with their two victories (over Rolla and the St. Louis Blue Knights) coming in the past six games. Offensively, the squad is led by 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Kaden Motley, who’s averaging 13 points and nearly four assists per contest.

Warrenton has won four of its last six meetings against Union, with the most recent, an 86-62 win for the Wildcats, occurring in January of 2015.

Thursday’s Union/Warrenton winner plays the Lutheran South/KIPP victor in the consolation championship Saturday at 4 p.m., while the losers’ matchup in the seventh place game at 2 p.m.

The tournament’s third place game is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, before the championship at 7.
