The Warrenton boys basketball team spent the bulk of its home opener against Washington on Tuesday chasing the Bluejays on the scoreboard.

After a nice first quarter, the Warriors fell behind and never could catch up, losing 62-48.

Warrenton coach Mark Thomas said that Warrenton (1-4) has got to do more to make its own luck.

“You’ll have those nights, and in those instances, we’ve got to do a better job creating opportunities for ourselves,” Thomas said. “Instead of forcing shots, we’ve got to find better, easier ways to score. We’re working way too hard for our shots.”

After taking the 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter in what started as a back-and-forth affair with four lead changes, Warrenton lost its lead in the first minute of the second quarter and would never lead again.

Washington (3-3) led 30-20 at halftime on its way to rolling to the victory.

Senior guard Demetrius Lockett led the Bluejays with 19 points.

Senior forward Taylor Anderson paced Warrenton with 13 points while senior guard Brodey Meier and Deadrick Forrest added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Anderson credited Forrest for helping him score his points, both on Tuesday and throughout the young season so far.

“It feels good that I have a guard who can read the floor so well,” Anderson said. “When I set screens, he can read them and tell which way I’m going and do really well in getting me the ball in a good position to score.”

Up next, Warrenton heads to Union (3-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

LIBERTY CHRISTIAN 69, MISSOURI MILITARY ACADEMY 56 – A 23-point first quarter set Liberty Christian on its way to victory on Tuesday.

The Eagles (8-1) led 41-23 by halftime and never looked back.

A pair of birthday boys had big nights as Phoenix Obermann (24 points) and Tommy Meyer (20 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and blocks) led the way as Obermann turned 17 and Meyer 18.

Liberty Christian will return to the court when it hosts Wellsville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, right after the girls' teams play.

BOWLING GREEN 43, WRIGHT CITY GIRLS 36 – A four-point first quarter proved challenging to overcome in the Wildcats' road loss on Tuesday.

Wright City (0-3) did have three players reach double figures in the game.

Shiriah McRoberts led the way with 13 points while Ada Ferrell scored 11 and Olviia Wilson pitched in 10.

Elsie Barton’s 13 points led Bowling Green (1-3).

Wright City will have a quick return to the court when the team travels to Valley Park (0-2) for a game at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

BOWLING GREEN 60, WRIGHT CITY BOYS 39 – In the boys’ game, host Bowling Green ran past Wright City.

Kaveon Schulte led the Wildcats with 10 points while Kaiden Pilcher and Johnathan Windmann each scored seven.

Bowling Green improved to 3-1 while Wright City fell to 1-2.
