Depth will not be a concern for first-year head coach Mike Uffmann this season. But it may take some time for the Warrenton boys basketball team to find its identity as individuals fall into their roles on the court."In the three years I’ve been here, this is the deepest team we’ve had,” said Uffmann. “I feel confident with any of those 13 out there at any time.”Once Uffmann determines the right combination to have on the floor at the same time, he feels confident the Warriors can experience success. This year’s team has just two returning starters in junior Alec Tonioli and senior Ron Richardson."We expect them to up their contributions from last year,” said Uffmann. After that, there is plenty of competition for every position on the floor.Tonioli will handle the two-guard role after averaging 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore.“He’ll be one of our best scorers,” said Uffmann. “He’s gotten wider through the shoulders and should be able to bully his way into the lane and present tough matchups.”Richardson will also play shooting guard and is the returning leading scorer with 8.8 points and 6.5 boards."Ron is tough around the rim and can finish acrobatic shots that don’t look like they’ve got a chance,” said Uffmann. The point guard role has multiple candidates, with senior Devon Hampton having started the season opener.“That position has been a nice battle to watch,” said Uffmann. “Hampton is more pass first and very good defensively, with good ball instincts.”He also sees junior Ryan Bradshaw and sophomore Braydan Chmiel as candidates.Additionally at guard, the Warriors will look to junior Ben Stevens and seniors Brian Lanigan and Garrett Capstick.“Ben is a great shooter off the bench,” said Uffmann. “Any time we see zone, he’ll get extended time.”Inside Warrenton possesses an interesting combination of height and strength, led by a blue-collar combo of Brandon Moeller and Taylor Duvel.“Brandon has been playing great in practice,” said Uffmann. “He’s done a lot of great things that might not show up in the scorebook. He’s a gel guy that holds us together on the court.”Those two opened the season at starters, but Craig Vardiman, Jordan Washington and Luke Hawley will also see time underneath the basket.“Washington is athletic and will help out inside,” said Uffmann. “Luke is a great leader, and Craig will probably be our best rebounder.”Vardiman is also the Warriors’ tallest player at 6-foot-4.Warrenton will operate out of a motion offense this season, with a defensive goal of holding opponents under 50 points.“We’ll have a lot of backdoor cuts and corner cuts by the guards,” said Uffmann.Defensively, the Warriors will use their athleticism in man-to-man defense.“We’ve been playing pretty tough halfcourt man to man,” said Uffmann. “We’re athletic, so we’ll throw a 1-3-1 trap out there and trap around that way as well.”Uffmann says the team set several goals, discussing them as a group.“We haven’t had a 10-win program in a while, so that was our No. 1 goal,” said Uffmann.WARRENTON BOYS BASKETBALLDerrick Forsythe Photo.
