Mike Uffmann has resigned as the Warrenton boys head basketball coach after leading the program for four years.
He was named the head coach at Fort Zumwalt North earlier this month,
“I wasn’t necessarily pursuing anything, but they came to me and I started looking into it a little more. And after I looked into it, I thought it was a really good fit,” Uffmann said. “A lot of it came down to family. I’m five miles away now instead of driving 35 minutes every day one way. If I can spend an hour less on the road every day, that will help out a lot.”
Uffmann posted a 47-58 record in four seasons with the Warriors, but had his most successful season in 2016-17, winning 18 games.
“When I came in, there was seven coaches in 10 years with a combined 67-188 record, so we had to come in and change the culture a little bit. The kids were a big part of that. They really bought in, and they were just awesome kids,” Uffmann said. “That was the hardest part of making this decision. It came down to the kids being the biggest argument for wanting to stay. The kids and the coaches. It will be tough to leave the rest of the coaches in the building because they were great to work with.”
The Warriors will have high expectations next season as four of their five starters and leading scorers return.
Uffmann takes over a Zumwalt North program that returns its top three scorers.
The Panthers finished 8-18 last season while competing in the Gateway Athletic Central conference.
“Their lower levels were really good last year,” Uffmann said. “They had some freshmen that started out on varsity and they really have some high-caliber players. They play a really tough schedule, too, so they have to have good players.”
Uffmann’s top assistant — and former head coach at Hannibal — Mark Thomas appears to be the leading candidate to replace Uffmann, although no decisions have been made.
“We’ve changed a lot of things and they are definitely headed in the right direction,” Uffmann said. “This junior class is loaded and they’re going to be pretty fun to watch next year.”
