The Warrenton Lady Warriors used five goals from Isabella Roberts and a defensive shutout to defeat Mexico High School last week.
The Lady Warriors defeated the Bulldogs 8-0 last Thursday to improve to 3-2 on the season. The win came two days after Warrenton lost to Hannibal 7-0.
Coach Amy Wargowsky thought the team played better in the second half of last week’s game than they did in the first half.
“I thought we started off a little flat and slow,” Wargowsky said. “But then we picked it up in the second half. We really started to make the connections. And I told the girls that soccer is a simple game. Stop making it more difficult than it has to be.”
The Lady Warriors were able to possess the ball in the Bulldog defensive half of the field for a majority of the game. Wargowsky said this made things easier for Warrenton. However, she stressed the Lady Warriors could have made things even simpler.
“It makes it a lot easier when we’re putting on the pressure,” Wargowsky said. “But we were taking too many steps. We could have made it even more simple. It does make it easier on the game. But it makes it more frustrating for me when we don’t keep it simple.”
Roberts scored two first half goals and a second half hat trick to lead the Lady Warrior offensive attack. Camryn Petersmeyer, Morgan Marschel and Megyn Young scored one goal each for Warrenton.
Roberts is the second Lady Warrior soccer player to score at least four goals in a game this season. Freshman Morgan Marschel scored four goals in a game against Fulton High School earlier this season.
It is a benefit to the team to have multiple players who can score, Wargowsky said.
“That’s great because in the past, we’ve had maybe two people that will take shots,” Wargowsky said. “The fact that we have more that are getting goals and actually taking the shots makes our chances even better.”
Wargowsky noted the Lady Warriors have dealt with injuries through the early portion of the season. She was hopeful to get some key players back for this week’s games.
The Warrenton Lady Warriors opened the season March 18 and March 19 at the Warrenton Tournament. Warrenton won two out of three games at the tournament.
The Lady Warriors won their season opener over the St. Louis Patriots. They won the game 1-0. Roberts scored the lone goal of the game in the first half. Marschel was credited with an assist.
Warrenton dropped the second game of the tournament. They lost to Washington High School 6-0.
The Lady Warriors responded later in the day. They defeated Fulton High School 8-0. Marschel led the Lady Warrior offensive attack with four goals. Petersmeyer scored three goals for Warrenton. Coryn Higby scored one goal.
