Warrenton basketball completes "Pink Out" sweep

Tuesday marked a special night for the Warrenton basketball programs.

During the varsity girls and boys games against Gateway Athletic Conference rival Winfield, each squad not only came away with nice wins, but the school community also honored its honorary MVP, Scott Haas, who started the boys game by tossing the opening tip-off.

Warrenton boys coach Mark Thomas said the games were a celebration of community.

“I can’t say enough about the Haas family and everything they’ve done for this community and this school, Thomas said. “It was great to have him be the recipient of the night. I think that sparked our guys because most of our team played football with Austin at some point or another.”

WARRENTON BOYS 61, WINFIELD 33 – The Warriors came out firing on ‘Pink Out’ night from the celebratory opening tip, scoring the first six points of the game and leading 19-7 by quarter’s end.

While junior guard Carter Martin drilled five 3-pointers for Warrenton (9-15), it was his driving lay-up in the opening salvo that set the tone.

“The confidence was running through my veins today,” Martin said. “I’m usually a shooter, so I saw the open lanes and I had the confidence to take it to the basket tonight.”

Thomas lauded Martin for his early drive and how it later paid dividends for him.

“It’s great to see him put it on the floor and get to the rim and finish with it really strong,” Thomas said. “That’s something he doesn’t do very often for us, but the more he does that, the more those threes will open up.”

Martin’s early drive was complemented by the play of senior guards Deadrick Forrest and Brodey Meier.

Forrest added 15 and Meier 14. Included in the barrage was a third-quarter dunk by Meier to effectively put an exclamation point on the contest.

WARRENTON GIRLS 48, WINFIELD 36 – The girls opened up the special night by getting off to a strong start.

Warrenton used a dynamic second quarter to turn a lead of 11-5 after the first to 32-11 by halftime, much to the delight of coach Hannah Logan.

The team’s success came without one of its mainstays, the coach said.

“We were without Zoe Duncan tonight, so we knew we had big shoes to fill,” Logan said. “Ava Schneider was back in the line-up and we got off to that great 21-point lead at halftime. We struggled in the third quarter, but we were able to keep the streak going.”

The ‘streak’ to which Logan referred was Warrenton’s 34th straight win over its GAC rival, dating back to February of 2000.

On Tuesday, Warrenton (9-12) was led by 17 points from junior guard Sophia Benke and 10 from senior forward Savannah Miller. In total, seven Warrenton players made their way into the scorebook.
