The Warrenton baseball team began the season 2-0. And then it snowed.Sunday’s interruptive winter weather provided quite the buzz kill for the Warriors, who opened the spring season on a promising note. The Warriors relied on a solid pitching effort to guide them to wins on Wednesday and Friday, while battling unseasonably cold temperatures.Coach Eric Burle says building an early cushion was critical in both contests.“Scoring first was key for us in both games,” said Burle.Warrenton returned from a road trip to Fox with a 7-4 victory.Junior Jordan Noble went 3-for-3 in the win, with two singles, a double and two RBIs.“In the Fox game, we were able to score a handful of runs, before they were able to answer,” said Burle.Kenny Dildine had two hits, while Brandon Moeller recorded two hits and a pair of RBIs.“Jordan and Brandon really shined in that first game,” said Burle. The Warriors scored two runs in the second and built their lead to 5-0 in the top of the third. Fox cut the deficit to 5-2, before Warrenton countered with another pair of runs in the top of the fifth.Paul Inman scored three times as a courtesy runner, while Jakob Junker and Carlos Raygoza reached home twice.Moeller started on the mound for the Warriors, striking out four and walking three through five innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs.Ben Stephens entered in relief during the final two innings, fanning one batter and walking another. He gave up two hits and one earned run.“Between Ben and Brandon, both of them will have to shoulder a lot of the load this season,” said Burle. “We’re asking Ben as a sophomore to shoulder the load against a lot of our conference opponents.”On Friday Warrenton held off Lutheran St. Charles in a 2-1 victory.“We had pretty solid defense in that performance,” said Burle.Stephens started, gaining immediate control on the mound. He struck out three batters, while not giving up a walk or earned run.“Ben was able to come out and sit them down in order in that first inning,” said Burle. “He set the tone early.”Junker drove home the initial run in the first inning, advancing Paul Inman to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.Lutheran tied the game in the top of the third, but freshman Dallas Johnson answered by scoring Moeller.Stephens finished with two hits, while Corey Eckenfels, Johnson and Junker each added a single.
Warrenton sophomore Ben Stephens pitches during the Warriors' 2-1 victory over Lutheran St. Charles last Friday.
